Wikipedia says we bought him for £10.4m and sold him for €13.5m, so that's about the same (give or take, depending on the exchange rate). It reminded me of the Corluka deal. We buy one of the most promising young defenders in Europe, they come for a season, they do pretty well, and yet somehow we fail to get a profit out of it. I've got no idea why we agreed to sell to Bayern for the same price that we paid.

Oh I missed the first figure was taken in pounds. I completely agree with you then. We seemed to get him on the cheap judging by his performances at the World Cup at left back. Bayern one of the biggest clubs in Europe chase him a year later and we fail to make a profit. Maybe as he wanted to leave the club accepted there money back rather than have a troublesome player in the ranks

That's bollocks though, if true. How many times did Spurs have a player who wanted to leave, and they still successfully held out for top money?

I reckon we'd break even there or make a small profit, not too many prolific proven goalscorers about, we'd have to sell before he gets any older to do so.
Once he re-signs that is, nothing that makes a players value drop like having less than 12 months on their contract.
