Project Data Collection on City - MMU

We now look more professional. We have become a brand. My mate was asked which Manchester team he supported three times whilst on holiday in America. Wouldn't have happened three years ago. We still have our identity though.
The sheikhs have made sure we keep with traditions of the club as much as poss. E.g old players brining on the trophy at end of season. How has it changed? It's changed for the better!

Thanks for the detailed responses guys, much appreciated.

Could you maybe ask your mates or people you know use this forum to take a look at this thread? Just the more opinions and responses I get the more backed up my work will be.

Thanks a lot.

Tom

What is your degree in? Because alot of these response are opinion, and if you need to be backed up it seems pretty pointless in asking the question. In my opinion image and identiy is extremely subjective and dynamic. Fans can feel one way one week and one way a next. Which isnt to say they do. Another important thing to note is that this image or identity is changed when you switch country. Country's can have sterotypical views of a club, that is to say a simple uninformed one, also they can have there own culture built around the club which they adhere to.

Back in point though, i think it in the minds of manchester city fans the club has been an ever changing entity, especially in the title winning year. The fear of being portrayed in a bad way is a constant threat from football journalism. Media spin has put more and more pressure on the club and in the end winning the title felt like alot of hard work but in a way was a triumph over that.

I dont want to go into the ins and out of what exactly is our image, because i think, like any club, it really is about passion and a individual putting hopes into a majority, whatever those hopes are. This is a big part of the identity - human emotion or the moments experienced.

ah just saw u said geography....

answer i gave a serious answer but i dont think everyone takes it THAT seriously...

Furthermore i seem to remember a similar thread like this a while back.....not you tho....whats going on......?

Are you really who you say you are..................

Regionally and locally, the academy support and foundation of the club has been enhanced dramatically with view to long term and continual improvements. There is a strategy visible to show self sustaining football clubs can engage community long term and produce local talent one day.

Nationally, the newspapers, PR appears to be comparable to the new riches movement of the USA gold rush. No one likes the balance of power to shift and the usual big four teams from having their rightful position.

I think economically, the takeover has been positive and injected local jobs in an area drastically neglected until the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and one that had been promsied Super Casinos, cricket grouds etc along the way.

The link between MCFC, local non-league teams is stronger. Hyde FC clearly benefitting.

Hi Thomas,

I'm an MMU Alumni.

Have you tried posing this same question to fans of other clubs? This way you can see how others have also seen our progress. It may well be that they all reply under the category of jealous fans but at least this would help you get more insights, more to write about with references beyond City fans.

Good luck :)

Hi

My names Thomas Burns, I'm a 3rd year Geography student at Manchester Metropolitan University. I am collecting data that will help me with my final year project. The aim of my project is: To what extent does the construction of global football brands impact upon place and identity and belonging, through a case study of Manchester City Football Club?

So I am here to ask a question that will hopefully create a discussion among the fans of Manchester City that I will monitor and hopefully give me enough information to proceed with my project.

The question is:

How do you think the image of Manchester City Football Club has changed since the Sheikh Mansour family takeover of the club in 2008?

Why do you want to know?

Thanks for the in-depth replies so far.

I have one more question to ask.

How do you think the takeover of the Mansour family has effected the city of Manchester as a city?
