Our kids were born in 99 and 08 so after much deliberation I've refused him anymore just Incase it's an omen
 
Talking of fans from lower league teams latching on to the rags, I seem to remember Swansea asking their fans not to come to their first game against them after promotion in any rag gear.
 
Whilst i love the fact that as an exiled manc i was lucky enough to be be born 3rd generation blue from Manchester . OK it was over 50yrs ago but Manchester means more to me than south east ever will. And yes i have put up with years of abuse from south east rags, but they dont like it back now, if fact its getting very getting very hard to see any rags unless they win the odd match !

But my main point is yes its grest that Manchester is blue but we will have south east fans and we must make them welcome . My two lads are fourth generation blue's and when we come up for a match we have southern accents but we are died hard blue's.

Yes they did. And so did Cardiff when they spent the season in the Prem League.

Down here in south wales, growing up, you either "like" Swansea or Cardiff as your local team but then you "support" a bigger team, mostly united or liverpool im afraid.

My son "likes" Cardiff but supports the City like his dad. Most of his friends follow united or liverpool like their dads.

Interesting. People from the City of Manchester tend to only support City or United but if they are from one of the outer boroughs of Greater Manchester whilst most support (actually go and watch) one of the big two they tend to also follow their local lower league club as a "second club".That may involve occasionally going to see them play or just following their results. Bolton and for a time, Wigan, actually have the majority of the town supporting them as their "first club" but they are exceptions.

As Dribble said earlier even when we were shite supporting City meant that you were already supporting a giant club (at least in our own heads) so there never was any desire to follow any other large club. I can understand people following a bigger club but what I don't like is when you get people from places like Kent supporting United or Liverpool. They live just down the road from London where there are 3 huge clubs and yet support clubs from the other end of the country which they have no connection with. I can kind of understand somebody from Cornwall supporting United or Liverpool because it's miles from any big club but I find it really strange when you get somebody from Birmingham supporting them.

Absolutely spot on.

The London based Rags and Dippers have no excuse for not having a decent team they could follow, and shows them up for what they are.

Luckily I was born in Manchester and there wasn't any need to look further afield, but have always had a soft spot for the clubs in the Greater Manchester area - apart from " the brand " of course.

Don't be surprised to hear more southern accents amongst our fan base... the amount of Londoners that have sold up and moved around here as it's much cheaper
is shit for us locals as everything becomes dearer.

It's rare you hear an English accent in Manchester city centre? That's a ridiculous statement! Where do you go? Exclusively to China Town? I spend a lot of time in town and I hear English and mostly Mancunian accents on every street I walk down.

It was on the tele a few years ago that more United shirts were sold in Cardiff than Cardiff shirts (before the change to red that was as well!) and more Liverpool shirts were sold in Sports Direct stores in Bristol than in the whole of Merseyside itself the other year http://m.bristolpost.co.uk/LIVERPOOL-shirts-sold-Bristol-Merseyside/story-25908390-detail/story.html

It's fucking hilarious that people are so insecure about the bobbins cities they live in and bobbins football clubs from those cities that they latch themselves onto big clubs to make them feel better because they have so little pride in the cities they come from and their local clubs. Or that their lives are so shit that they need the reflected glory from "supporting" a big club to make them feel like they're living a better life than they really are.

To any of these glory hunters watching; there's nowt wrong with being bobbins, don't be so insecure about it!

When I look around our ground and see the glory hunters out in force with their half'n'half scarves on I don't half cringe, I feel sorry for them in a way! The worst are Champions Lg nights, there's fucking loads of them.

Plus I wouldn't say a mere 52% of our shirts being sold in the North is anything to brag about! Whether that's a lot more than United or not.

Hang on - in 99 we won the play-off to get back into the 2nd flight and in 2008 Sheikh Mansour bought City. Im not sure in retrospect that Utd benefited the most from these years.
 
When Wigan Athletic graced the Premier League , around 2012 , i was introduced to the delights of Wigan shopping centre by my beloved , i ventured into the JJB store , and there was 5 rows of Rag shirts , 5 rows of Dipper shirts and 5 rows of Wigan Rugby shirts , and just one row of Wigan Athletic home and away shirts , which sums up supporters in small provincial towns . No doubt the 10,000 supporters Wigan Athetic have lost since their premiership demise have now reverted to type , glory hunting tw*ts. As for Manchester , in my opinion , i still think the Rags shade the local support in general , but actual match going support , we are well ahead , blues go to games , Rags watch it in armchairs and on bar stools.
 
If Nike/Adidas etc have clout, they make more shirts, they supply shops, and shops buy more, they bulkbuy blindly at lower costs and ship them all over the show. Kids are raised on who is the best at the time, terrestrial TV coverage of the so-called-big, like back then. Liverpoo, Scum, Arsenal and Chelski. Their kids follow on... and the odd well marketed tier two team from Spurs, Rangers, celtic etc get a few peripheral plodders. What chance do the likes of Plymouth, Ipswich etc have when their main sport shops stock the considered top clubs? And, our shirts are far easier to find than ever before. The LCS range was the first time I found more than 1 shirt outside of Manchester. Umbro swept in... Nike reigned. City benefited.
