Proof that Manchester IS blue

its just laughable mate. its not even an insult, i can drive to the city centre in 15 minutes from where i live, right next to outer manchester - burnage, didsbury. bit different to living down south like a lot of their fans do. I've even had united fans from stockport say to me ' typical stockport city fan' when they themselves live in stockport. i think its great most of our match going fan base is local/close, bet they wish they still had that.
Remember when they just used to laugh at us for being shit and insignificant?
People overlook the fact many Mancunians move to affluent parts of Stockport whilst climbing the social ladder.

I've always wondered what fans of other teams make of this "Stockport" insult ? As I bet most other fans would see Stockport as part of Manchester anyway ! Still it's a great come back to "all your fans come from London" , "well all your fans come from a town 10 mins away on the train" !
Also didn't all this Stockport stuff start with Terry Christian, a guy that lives in Bramhall I believe ?

I remember reading Glory Glory a few years ago after a national survey had come been published on distances travelled to watch PL teams. At the time 68% of our match going support lived within 10 miles of The Etihad. The Spurs fans, who generally don't like City, were really impressed at how local our support was.

In terms of fans of other teams view of things then yes, Stockport, or indeed any of the boroughs that make up Greater Manchester are just seen as Manchester to them. I got chatting to a Rag on holiday a couple of years ago and he said he was from Redcar. I immediately thought why would a guy from "Middlesborough" (closest big team) support the Rags? I told him I was from Stockport, his face sank, and he said "oh you actually are from "Manchester"."

I've always lived in Trafford. When I was in school it seemed to be 99% United fans. I was one of few! Now it genuinely seems like there are more City fans here than United. If you look at actual match going supporters then the blues vastly outweigh the reds in Urmston/Sale. In fact, I only know 2 united season ticket holders from around my area, I know about 20-25 City SC holders!

It's all a load of rubbish anyway. I support the team I was born closest too. The team my dad and his dad watched throughout their childhoods. City is a part of the culture where I live and I couldn't think of anything worse than supporting a team 250+ miles away just because they're successful. There's more to football then winning!

Olden Days - City fans were more hardcore and there were a lot
Modern Days - A lot more City fans but somehow the hardcore has been diluted. We need that back, in the ground, at the games, in the players faces.

Remember one dickhead utd fan ringing up talksport days before the semi against them, he give it the normal crap' ie i'm Bertie from Stockport, then went on to say "no i'm not going the semi, all the buses are full from north Manchester" I remember thinking, what a dick doesn't even know where is Stockport is, north Manchester !

Very true and not just affluent people there are loads of overspill council estates in the outer boroughs of Greater Manchester comprised of people whose ancestors came from inner city Manchester.

I don't think we should over egg this too much though. Manchester at it's peak in the 1930s was a city of about 750,000 people. Even at that time there were the best part of 2 million people living outside of the city proper but in areas that currently make up the Greater Manchester of today. Gary James has written that City attracted support from these areas even before the First World War. We have generations of support in these areas.

I think the fact that we alone play in the city proper is something to be proud of and all other clubs in the area are suburban but we need to be careful we don't overdo it. Tevez has recently referred to us as being "a neighbourhood club" when he joined us from the scum. We aren't and never were Rochdale or even Bolton Wanderers. I've heard Rags refer to us as "Manchester Inner City" and themselves as "Greater Manchester United". It's bullshit. We along with them attract support throughout the entire conurbation but in terms of match goers we attract more.

absolutely loads of united fans in stockport

Yeah it's swimming in them. Always makes me laugh when they throw the Stockport jibe at us and it makes my mates who are reds from Stockport cringe. Even funnier when some Home Counties berk uses the Stockport 'insult' as well, Stockport's a lot closer than Wycombe you twat.

Born in Old Trafford, not Manchester, lives in Bramhall works as the Village Idiot to some aplomb

It's interesting, but not much more than that! and even less relevant given where we want to be.

Liverpool and the rags don't come out well because of their years of success and their national / global appeal. We all know that there are at least as many of them in Manchester /Liverpool than us. Some will go to the games, some wont for various reasons.

Its a fact of modern football life that the more successful you become the more diluted your local support will become.

A stat that some seem proud of now will be very different following 10 more years sustained success both here and in Europe. Come the euro/world super league (and it will come and assuming we are in it) the club will need to embrace a more global and diverse support.
IMO This stat is merely a snapshot in time, a simple reflection of how poor we were as a club and the loyalty of those residents of MCR that remained followers.

This sort of stat used to be a badge of honour for a team that won nothing! We have loftier ambitions now! I am sure i recall that one of the many given reasons behind Sheikh Mansour's investment in City was the loyalty shown by the people of Manchester towards their club and how it was important to have a strong base to work from for his planned vision.

exactly. other trends that have been happening everywhere people moving further out. my parents both lived in levenshulme when they were younger, area got worse they got better jobs and moved out. the difference is though those areas in manchester - tradiotnal working class areas still have loads of match going/ supporting blues. united have ;lost that.

as I said stockport is the equivalent of salford just on the other side of manchester, but i always hear salford reds .

Everything considered , there is one simple fact , our support is growing , whilst every year the Rags do not qualify for the champs league or get into cup finals , means they are haemorraging their armchair fans , if they do not turn around their current downward spiral in the next couple of seasons , they will become the new Dippers , talking about 1999 , and the class of '92 , and they will eventually forget why they bought Norwich City scarves. Is'nt payback a bitch
