Protest at Media City

One side claims the BBC is pro-Arab. The other side that it's pro-Israeli. That tends to lead to a somewhat smug or simplistic assertion that they therefore must be pretty well impartial. But it's not that simple. The view put across can depend on the journalist, the editor, the context and a host of other things, including the perception of the audience.

In 2004, stung by criticism that it was relentlessly pro-Palestinian, the BBC commissioned Malcolm Balen, who was a senior editorial adviser to the corporation, to examine and report on the allegations. The Balen report has been kept secret but a leak says that he did conclude that the BBC's coverage was markedly pro-Palestinian. Orla Guerin, as an example, made no secret of where her sympathies lay. There was so much hatred of her coverage among Jews in the UK that I know it was being put about that she was Bernadette Devlin's daughter (which is not true).

Since the Balen report, it appears that the BBC has made significant efforts to change its reporting of the on-going conflict but it may well be that it has gone a little too far the other way. The only reporter I truly trust of theirs is Jeremy Bowen, who is generally pretty objective.

Read a story on the beeb this morning in which Hamas were described as, 'Islamic militant extremists'. Now i don't know much about the shit going on over there but surely this is a strange way to label them?

I wish you could just pay for the parts of the BBC that are worth it.

1. Test match special.
2. BBC 4.
3. Sports part of their internet site.

That would be ok for like minded folk marching for me as it aint worth £150 a year.... more like a tenner a year. Ah well.
You forgot Eastenders and Masterchef!

The bit I read on their sports app. last night wasn't the greatest.

The headline read, "Wigan pull off surprise victory in South of France."

They were 4/7 to win. Hardly on a par with Foinaven.

Regardless of perceived bias one way or the other, I feel that Al Jazeera presents news as though they're aiming it at educated adults, whereas I always get the feeling from BBC news programmes that they treat their audience as fairly clueless, stupid children, on this and any other subject.

They do, it's bloody patronising but then you have to remember that they are broadcasting to places like London, Liverpool and Birmingham.

Was coming back from town through Cheetham Hill about 1.30pm and heard honking of horns and saw the cars with flags all over them and full of lads looking tough. There was another car that said Biased Broadcasting Company with some scales tipped in the favour of an Israel flag.
A cop van pulled behind them from the lights at the old Halfway House but it did look like this procession had been through Prestwich - as most know a big Jewish community which I thought was being a somewhat provocative.

Can't think of anyone else it could have been.

And therein lies the BBC's (largely self-inflicted) problem. They get stick from pro-Israelis and the right-wing press for not describing them as "terrorists". And they get stick from the other side when they do. So instead of saying nothing (eg just using 'Hamas' without a description) or sticking to their guns and taking the stick, they try to come up with something that doesn't offend anyone. But it actually offends everyone.
