What gets me is these people are protesting against a government that is supposed to be some kind of ruthless, hardline state... yet that same government has allowed these protests to continue and escalate for weeks now without cracking down on them.

Compare that with this so called 'democracy' that we have in the U.K. ... where any form of protest that is deemed to be inconvenient, no matter how small, peaceful and non-threatening, can be crushed instantly with the police-state powers that exist.
