In my view, we should have a secular state and religion should only be explained in school in the broadest terms so that everyone understands what some people believe. There is no need to go into detail or to offer gratuitous offence.

However, as an extreme secularist, I believe children's exposure to religion should be limited to 3-5 hours a week, including attendance at services, and anything above that should be treated as child abuse. If people want to become devout once they are over 18, that's fine.

I tend to think about religion in the same way many religious adherents think about homosexuality.

If they want to do it in their own homes and with other consenting adults then that’s fine. Just don’t do it in public or rub it in our faces (and especially don’t teach children about it). And if they want to get help to cure them of this weird mental illness, then I support them.

It won't because Governments of all colours pander to religions, and indeed to religious zealots. (I mean religious zealots of all shades, not least "Christians". Most of whom would be better called "alleged Christians".

IMO this is not a Good Thing. But you see, I think society should be more secular. Private individuals should be free to worship trees if they wish, but the state should not be involved.

Apparently the teacher was teaching about blasphemy in different religions. And I'd say his/her students have probably learned a lot about blasphemy from this.

I said pages ago that I’d like to hear the actual context as to why it was shown, because the context that very often is the most important thing, not necessarily the action itself.

Worth noting that Muslims don’t automatically blow up or kill people when they shout that. It simply means “god is great” and they say it when protesting, when their team scored a goal, during an Earth quake or a million other times.

I have no time for these protesters or their cause but I thought it worth noting that shouting that phrase isn’t worthy of any police inference any more than City fans chanting “City, City, City”.

I guess we should be thankful that the U.K.* has moved on, 500 years ago and they were burning people at the stake for this level as blasphemy.

*Also pleased we weren’t in Mosul two years ago when ISIS were doing similar.

Religion is so at odds with the modern world that it should be seen as detrimental, and as you say a form of child abuse, to force children from an age where they can’t form their own opinions that they must believe in one archaic and fantastical way of thinking.
