Pub for Newcastle?

I went in a pub just outside the Newcastle ground a few years ago where you had to pay a deposit for a pint glass, I suppose in case people nicked them / glassed people.

Rough as a bear's arse.

This was before a rugby match not the footy though.

Edit: just looked on google maps and it's called 'The Strawberry'.

Wouldn't fancy going in there again, it was like a scene from Life on Mars.

The Strawberry isn't rough, when I've been in it at least, NOT on a match day.
It has an upstairs and also an outside area.
Think it gets rammed on a match day though.
The "Irish Centre" is near the ground, cheap & cheerful...

Bloody was when I went in but this was in about 2018, maybe it's been "done up"

Can't remember an outside/terrace area but to be fair I was probably a bit pissed watching the rugby all day.

Be aware, especially if you're driving up, town is a building site at the moment - road closures and diversions all over the place. Tyne Bridge is either closed or one lane only depending on the time of day.

Been in the Duke of Wellington on High Bridge for the last few visits, really good. Close to the ground, but not right on top of it. Like most Newcastle pubs, friendly enough if you behave.
