Rents? I knew a very hard-working lad who was tenant in a pub, and made it pretty successful, selling more beer than before, running beer festivals and all the rest. The owner's reaction was not 'oh great, we've got a good tenant here' but instead 'this twat is making money - we'll put up the rent by by an incredibly stupid percentage.'

As a result, the business failed, and the lad got a debt of £60k or thereabouts. He is still working hard, driving a taxi for next to f-all a week. Great system they have in the pub trade.

I wouldn't touch a pub unless it was a free house, owned by me, with prospects to sell good food, and if I also had a bundle of cash in the bank to cover me if things went wrong. It's no wonder pub prices are high, and no wonder either that so many are closed.

That sounds about right for a pubco. I'm remember when one of my brother in laws pub got took over around 9 years ago. Punch (the owning pubco) told him to put up his prices from around £2 a pint for Carling up to £5 for a pint of Carling. Just so he could pay the extra 100k a year in rent and cover the near doubling in beer prices (beer had to be bought of punch).

It seems the norm for punch to stick their oar in and up the prices. Did at a mates pub. I'm sure he bought outright in the end.

The sooner we all work out we are being had by " the man" the better. The average working person has been priced out of: football, mortgages, driving, restaurants, pubs and soon busses.

Our nation is corrupt, our leaders are working against us and work hand in hand with huge companies for whome the rules of capitalism only works in their favour. For example Tesco has just announced a massive drop in profits, will they now go on the offensive and drop their prices massively so they can compete with Aldi etc? No, they will come up with a cozy arrangement with their competitors that prices will stay in and around a certain level, thus not having to worry about competition.

Pubs will keep charging those prices because they are forced to by their agents/landlords those companies don't have to worry about business dropping, it's not their problem, they will mothball the property if needs be and they will wait for better times, same goes for house building companies "banking" land. Capitalism doesn't matter to them , really they should be taking a hit but they are so powerful, they don't have to.

Time to 're nationalise, break up some of these monsters who are taking us for a ride, 're balance the nation so it returns to working for us and not the other way round! 4 pound a pint, cheeky twats!!!

Isn't it amazing that you here SO much in the media about supermarkets "loss leading " on booze, but you don't tend to hear that much about pubs taking the piss. Almost as if they would prefer us to be bankrupting ourselves when we unwind from the stresses of the working day.

We have become nothing more than battery hens. Living in a box, doing what we are told, when we are told too.

I don't doubt the sincerity in your post for one second - but if your views are so plausible then why has no group of people emerged to challenge the present incumbency with their policies? I myself have worked hard from day one in my chosen field (Publishing) and am now studying part time to become a writer. I've made my own luck and am confident it will produce results one day. I'm asking for help when I need it and I'm getting it.

Start a new thread, maybe call it 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist', and use this as your first post. On a Bank Holiday weekend it should go beyond 50 pages.

Tesco today promised to accelerate the price war against its supermarket rivals and the discounters, as CEO Philip Clarke said the £200m offensive launched in February was “just the start” of things to come. The move came as the retailer announced its second year in a row of falling profits, with UK like-for-like sales down 1.3% and group profit of £3.3bn, down 6% in the year ending 22 February.Clarke, who has come under increasing pressure from some investors, warned that sales in the UK were being held back by the company’s struggle to transform its general merchandise business in the face of the shift to online and the “increasingly competitive” grocery market.

But he hit back at suggestions he could step down and said he intended to remain at Tesco to see through its turnaround strategy.Promising to roll back the price of more products, following an average reduction of 24% on everyday ranges such as carrots, cucumbers and peppers, Clarke said: “£200m was just the start and we will see more coming. We retain the flexibility to do what is necessary and we will see more prices coming down.”

Read this: Tesco’s store plan: More Giraffes and gyms in the pipeline. Clarke said Tesco had to be “much closer if not the same” on the price of everyday items as the likes of Aldi and Lidl, who have been eating away at its share.Tesco has come under increasing pressure to act after Morrisons promised in March to throw £1bn at price cuts over the next three years. In November Asda pledged £1bn in cuts over five years. However Clarke refused today to put a figure on how much the further cuts would cost.Tesco also revealed further plans to speed up the refresh programme of its large stores, with 160 revamps set for this year, or three per week. Clarke said refreshes to date had seen sales uplifts of 3-5% and promised Tesco would revamp 650 stores in total in the UK this year.“We are transforming Tesco through a relentless focus on providing the most compelling offer for our customers,” said Clarke. “Our results today reflect the challenges we face in a trading environment which is changing more rapidly than ever before. We are determined to lead the industry in this period of change.” Internationally, Tesco reported a 27.7% fall in profit in its European operation, where it recorded a one-off impairment of £734m after revising its long-term budget. “Challenging” conditions and declining profits had led it to cut its capex in Europe, Tesco said. Profits fell 5.6% in Asia, where Tesco again cited “difficult trading conditions” and stumbling blocks such as new restrictions on trading hours in South Korea.

Three of my four local bars/pubs/clubs do happy hour 5-7 £2 a pint then the rest of the time the Carling at them is priced at £2.80, the pub that dont do the happy hour is priced at £3.30 and is the one thats closing.

The one that's charging £3.30 is probably owned by Punch and they're forcing the landlord to sell at those prices.

It's a Robinson's house not a Punch Taverns one pal.
