Punk and New Wave thread.

I met Glen in 1990 at that downstairs book shop on corner of Mosley Street / Market Street when first edition of that book came out. Before going there I'd seen a queue in Arndale WH Smith waiting to see George Best. Glen wanted to go there and meet him. At the time I had long hair and he said 'you're not a punk', I'd have thought he'd have known that punk is a state of mind not appearance.

Some great choons in those lists in fairness. May I politely suggest Radio Stars - "Nervous Wreck" and Patrik Fitzgerald "Safety pin stuck in my heart". Maybe already mentioned. If so, excuse me.

Bloody hell didn't know about this when I saw the Frank Turner / Pistols gig last year
She says Paramount did nothing to protect her from Jones - on a day (and place) where no filming took place.
Has she asked her parents why - when she was 14 - she was allowed on her own to go to a downtown hotel?

As a Conflict guy, I felt duty bound not to like New Model Army back in the day.

But been playing this album a bit over the last couple of nights and I’ve got to admit that it’s packed with quality tunes.

Is that because they signed to EMI?
I didn’t get into NMA until Thunder & Consolation in 89, & is still my favourite album from them.

I'm usually good with recalling bands / gigs but struggling on this one.....
I saw either Conflict or Dirt at Cloud 9 around 86 / 87.
85% it was Conflict.
I also had tickets for a play at the Palace Theatre, which started at something like 7pm so I knew I could get to both play and gig.
The thing was, we had decided to go to the play wearing a suit / dickie bow tie etc. I had dyed, short, spikeyish hair at the time so got quite a few second glances when wondering around Cloud 9 in that attire and hairdo in a venue watching an anarcho band!
Thinking about it now I'd say it was 98% it was Conflict, couldn't see me making the effort to see Dirt (maybe they were the support?)

just seen this, pal.

sent deno (dirt singer) a message 2mins ago to ask her.
she replied immediately saying...

"it doesn't ring a bell.
we were gigging with antisect at the time,
so probably conflict not us."

i know colin from conflict wooed her when she was 17 for a very brief time so it's unlikely they were on the same bill at such a small venue.
she calls him "colin plonker".

I saw Conflict at Cloud 9 definitely one time. Wouldn’t have a clue about the year but ‘86 would probably be about right. Haven’t got a clue who the support was now. In fact I can’t recall even seeing one. Maybe I was a bit late?

There was a bit of argy bargy on the floor after the gig and Colin and a few others came charging over and helped sort it out, if that rings any bells? But that sort of thing happened on a pretty regular basis at their gigs, so not really a memorable incident.

Signing for EMI and just ‘selling out’ in general I think.

New Model Army appeared on Top of the Pops and the lead singer wore a t-shirt that said, “Only Stupid Bastards Use Heroin”

Conflict then brought out an album:

And it kind of went from there.

I actually saw New Model Army at The Ritz a few years later and got my head caved in because I was wearing a Conflict t-shirt. Suppose it would have been sensible to have worn something different. But you think a bit differently at that age I suppose.

Thanks! Don’t recall the scrap at the front though. At least that helped me 100% know it was Conflict.
Don’t recall any other gig at Cloud 9 before or after.
Whenever I walk down Cross Street (which isn’t often these days!) I always take a glance down Back Pool Street at the exit doors and wonder if the underground alcoves and function room are still there or if they were filled in during renovation work on the building above.

They did/do have quite a passionate fanbase don’t they! I’m 6’2” & a veteran of many mosh pits in the 80s- 90s but I stayed well away from the “pit” the potential of the odd stray clog & dreadlock whiplashed into an eye spoiling your evening was quite high!

R.I.P Edweena Banger , having been your bass man for well over ten years on and off, produced and played on various Nosebleeds albums and countless gigs across the country, I can honestly say that I haven't laughed so much in that time, also had
so many enlightening conversations about your incredible life , you could write 10 songs a day all better than most of your contemporaries , you personified punk rock for me, challenging the norms and pushing boundaries almost to the limit, Dawny Acton and I where always proud to call you a friend, we will miss you and my bass guitar I suspect will collect dust for a long time to come ...thank you Edweena xxxX
