Puppy Advice

I feel your pain mate! I have a 10 month old Cocker Spaniel who's a bit of a 'chewer' and who will eat anything. Stones are a particular favourite, God knows why cos they can't taste of much, but there's not much he won't pick up and eat, which can make walking him a bit of a nightmare. Also, you don't realise how much shite people throw on the pavements until you spend half your life trying to stop your dog picking up a plastic fork, a bit of rotting fruit or even a fag end. Get him, and you, some training (it's only my opinion) but you need to be part of any training because you want the puppy to listen and react to you not the dog trainer. Ours did some group training early on but found the other puppies distracting, he's having some 1-2-1 training this Thursday. Wish you luck with her.

Would anyone advice maybe getting another dog so the puppy has some company? maybe one that's already house trained so can help keep puppy in check?

My puppy constantly eating grass and I know what you mean.. went to the park and there's fag ends, donor kebab meat, sick etc after a friday night.. disgusting !

How much is the 1-2-1 dog training? I reckon my puppy will be too hyper/energetic to listen to any controlled training LOL no patience /1

I'm gonna trying walking my puppy more.. the thing is, she gets knackered after like a 10-15 minute walk so I'm thinking also that she needs more walks in quicker bursts to tire her out.

a good trick is to throw a toy upstairs to tire her out and she keeps bringing it back lol

Is there anyone I can pay who can train her? as obviously I'm not doing it right.. but if she doesn't listen to the word NO, I don't see how anyone can train her!?

If you're going to take her to training, I'd recommend a trainer that uses positive reinforcement methods. Dogs find it hard to differentiate between good and bad attention, because they just see it as attention. Young dogs really don't understand "no" and the focus is on rewarding good behaviour, distracting from bad behaviour.

There's a TV programme called "It's Me or The Dog" (which you can find regularly on the Freeview channels somewhere) which demonstrates positive reinforcement in action. The woman presenter is Victoria Stilwell, who runs a network of local trainers using the methods.

Website has good introduction to methods and you can find a trainer near you.

I've never used the trainers, but I like the way they do things on the TV programme. I used similar methods on my dogs, both are really relaxed and obedient, but I had the sense to avoid terriers of any shape or size!

Good luck....

The key thing is to be consistent in praising good behaviour and not ignoring the bad behaviour, our dog is coming up to 4 years old and has gone through various stages where she tries it on. Always make a big fuss over her when she does something good but be stern on her when she is bad.

Most dogs eat grass, it's good for the digestion apparently, Zaba's particularly fond of tree bark as well (comes out just as it went in, lovely!). The trainer we're using is the one who ran the puppy classes he went to, she's charging £40 an hour, about the going rate I guess when you compare driving lessons, golf lessons etc. Casserole's right about Victoria Stilwell, our trainer uses the 'positively' training theory (basically, reward good behaviour, ignore bad behaviour). I gather most people have moved away from the 'treat em mean, keep em keen' way of training. Try some individual training, it's got to be worth a go.
