I still don’t understand how that’s offside today

They seem to have concluded that the player making the pass is offside, he’s the one heading it from under the keepers grasp and one of his legs is offside

Since when did that come into it? Is it not always the player receiving the pass

What am I missing here

I’m guessing you’re looking at an image where the player who actually heads the ball is obscured by the ‘keeper. When I first saw it I couldn’t understand how anybody could be off side as there only seemed to be one attacker and the ‘keeper in the vicinity. But there’s two attackers. One challenges the ‘keeper and gets a head on it and his mate who it drops to is narrowly but clearly offside.

The VAR and the computer can decipher that by the letter of the law it was offside. Without this technology it would never be deemed offside in real time by the naked eye. The defending side never played offside.

It was pure luck that Qatar did not concede a goal. Completely against the spirit of the law and the beautiful game per se.

Well that’s a matter of opinion. But while we have VAR they may aswell get stuff right, as they have here.

That can't be right. I've been told they're very passionate about football over there. There's no way they'd pay for a ticket and only manage to support their team for half a game.

The reporter at the start of the programme also said that tickets were very easy to come by and the majority were taken by fans of neither team.

Which is also a bit odd for a country playing their first ever World Cup game.

Thats the problem with VAR, it has to go by the letter of the law. The advantage going to the attack in tight situations has effectively been abolished. They have toned down the power of VAR in borderline cases but more could be done e.g. what advantage does an attacker get if his shoulder (only) is offside?

Well some might say that going by the letter of the law isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’m not sure if FIFA are working to the same guidelines but certainly in Europe they have introduced a benefit of the doubt rule. If the two lines are touching, it’s onside even if the attackers line is slightly the more advanced of the two. Might not be as much leeway as some would like but it is there.

No margin of error at the WC. Offside by a little toe is offside.

Once again, this "his foot/knee was offside" thing is ridiculous. For two reasons.

Firstly, if someone is running they have no control over where there feet and knees are. They can't suddenly stop moving their legs if they are protruding too far. They will fall over. Penalising someone for where they are in their stride is just stupid.

Secondly, a player judges an offside by looking across the line. they don't have sensors in their feet to judge if their boots are offside. Using feet and knees turns an offside trap, or the springing of one, into a lottery, rather than a skill of timing.

Oh yes, A third one. FIFA didn't want the introduction of VAR to create different rules for the games at different levels. Well these VAR offside rules do just that. There is no way any linesman in the world judges offside by looking at someone's feet, imo, certainly when they are running. Torsoes all the time. You want the same playing field at all levels, use technology to simply improve the way the game was managed. Don't use technology to be more accurate than neccessary to the detriment of the game.

Go Qatar!

One Love armband? yeah! one love for the cash!

The Quatar captain - wearing jersey #10 (forgot his name) - had an even worse touch than Bony.

I swear, half the time #10 received the ball it would immediately boink off him and end up about 10 yards ahead of where he stood.

Afif, though, looked very solid.

At any rate, Quatar are awful, mostly. They'll finish last in their group and might not even score a single goal.

Great post

They probably decided to go to a local flogging which was just about to start down the road.
