Hello all,

Just wanted some general advice or to hear anyones successful experiences in attempting to give up.

I've managed to cut down from about 20 a day to 2 for the last 2 weeks or so, and am finding it surprisingly easy to do. What seems impossible is getting rid completely. I wanna do this before it starts to creep back up again.

Can anyone give me any advice on what works and what doesn't?

Cheers.

Have never touched one, but realise how hard it is. And not being flippant here, but my old man losing my mum in her early 50's to lung cancer, then being diagnosed with throat cancer a few years back himself, (luckily caught early and removed) was what it took for him to finally quit. The thought that you can be avoiding all that can be a great incentive. Good luck with it. pal.

This is a tv ad being shown here in Australia regarding smoking. It is very simple but it has been causing a furore on talkback shows. Quit (Cancer Victoria) has made ads showing diseased arteries, poisoned lungs etc hoping to shock people into not smoking but now they have gone for the emotional side of it. Enjoy!

You know how you currently go to the shop and buy fags? Well don't do that anymore. Then you'll have nothing to smoke (except for coffee granuals, tried it once, wasn't very successful).

Hope that helped!

The best thing I found,is to wear 2 patch;s at the same time

one over each eye so you can;t find your fags..

Patches. They do varying strengths. Use them for as long as needed. The advice on the packets of how long it takes to stop according to GP mates of mine is ridiculously optimistic. It will take much longer. No matter. All the patches give you is nicotine. That means no more of the hundreds of other poisons that were killing you. Your lungs will be clearing immediately. I kept on with patches until I just started to forget to take them and noticed I wasn't climbing up the wall. It is 6 years now. There was a time when I felt I could murder a fag but it wasn't the craving of addiction. Now the smell of cigs nauseates me. Society has changed so much in the last couple of years that you really notice the smell of cigs outside Tesco and hospitals. I went to see a play last week where the cast smoked on stage. I could still smell it on my jacket next day! Good luck. Just keep at it. Don't they reckon it takes about 6 goes to give up smoking completely?
One other thing I did was put the money I had saved away each week. After a year I took the family on holiday for a week in Greece on the proceeds!

it sound's obvious but willpower is the main requirement. Really strong tasting mints or fisherman friend's helped me, stick a few in your mouth and deep intake of breath's, this give's you a bit of a "hit" that take's your breath away. in my experience nicotine substitute's never worked. I tried to give up about 5 time's before i actually suceeded. I was one very angry person when trying to give up. Good luck, you sound like your doing well, keep it up it's great when you know you've finally suceeded.

I was smoking 10 a day when I was 11 and 20 a day at 16, by the time I gave up 24 years later, I was on 40 roll ups a day.
I dreaded trying to stop. I was so hooked that I wouldn't go anywhere I couldn't smoke.
7 years ago I had to go in hospital for major surgery. I knew I would be bed bound for at least ten days after my op and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to stop.
I was in so much pain after the op and combined with nicotine withdrawal, I can honestly say it was the worst 4 days of my life. In fact it was so bad, it put me off smoking for life, I wouldn't want to go through it again, lol. If you can go for 4 days, then it's out of your system and it's just psychological, the physical craving is gone.
I enjoyed smoking but I'm not sorry I stopped. I wish you luck mate, all you need to do is get through 4 days.

There's a book by Allen Carr(not not comic) which i used to quit.
You contiue to smoke while you are reading it and as you get near the end you'll just want to stop, infact it becomes enjoyable to stop, you have no cravings you just stop and thats it.
It's well worth a go, if you don't like reading he has clinics all over the place i think its about £200 for the day and then you'll be a non smoker.
Being tight i bought the book off amazon for a fiver.
It does work!

i lost both parents to lung cancer, mum was 46. if you have kids and want to see them marry etc pack it in.

I just stopped smoking. Smoking less cigarettes week for week never worked for me. Must be seven years now.

sometime you will just get so frustrated and determined that you will do it. willpower only, though if patches or books help, great. its just you in the end though. 9 years and counting .good luck

My sister in law got cancer 6 years ago and she, me, my brother, my missus, and my best mate all gave up together, all just stopped cold turkey. Not one of us have started again. Doing it together really helped as you didn't wan't to let any of the others down, not to mention my two 6 & 7 year old nephews. (She is 5 years clear of the dreaded C now).

Shame that it take something quite terrible to change your views on giving up as I had 'given up' several times before and not really meant it.

my sister has been on a course of tablets she got from the doctor which are supposed to stop your craving for a fag. she recokns they work really well, although there are loads of side effects and the doctor wont give them to just anyone because they can make you go a bit mental apparently.

im going ot try quitting when ive finally got through these last packs of duty free, not spending another winter as one of the huddled outcasts in pub doorways

is that the "Champix" tablets, my mate is on them and says they do work, he's still had the odd craving for a fag but if he has one he can only take a couple of puffs before he has to put it out. Think I'll be going to see my doc to get on the programme for them, think it's a 12 week stint. I said I would give up before i hit 40, only got about 4 weeks to go!!!

how does that work?

If you think you will crack it in 12 weeks you will fail. You will beat the physical dependancy but the psychological dependency on Nicotine is quite astounding. In that sense it is one of the most addictive substances in existence.
