What an absolutely outstanding achievement. Bear in mind, he has not even played a full season in England! I would be amazed if that has ever happened before.
Let's be honest, he's got some fair competition too - Fernandes, Kane, KdB and Gundogan. Any of those players could easily have won it and it's far easier for attacking players to win it over defensive ones, especially given they've had a full season. I really think this award is fully justified and shows what an impression he's had.
I think we also need to congratulate the club as well on this one. Dias was on no ones radar at all when we signed him. Everyone was expecting Koulibaly who I'm sure would've done a similar job to Dias. However, the club stuck to its decision and moved away from a proven, battle tested defender and went for it's next target. That takes some bottle and it's clear the scouts and Pep did their homework. I really hope they get a bonus for this. What really shines through with him, more than his football ability, is his confidence, assuredness and determination to be the best. You can't buy that. It's like he's been playing for 20 years!
We could've been watching Koulibaly and wishing he was 10 years younger like we do with Fernandinho. Instead we have a player who is arguably the best central defender in the world and has a good 10 years ahead of him.
What it shows is that with good planning and scouting, the club can replace legends with new legends.
