It’s also one element of Britishness that Americans are insanely jealous of. Look, you don’t have to believe or understand it, or even like it, it is just a nice thing to give someone with an interesting historical context. I’m fairly ambivalent about royalty, but surely having a way of recognising people with honours isn’t part of that, don’t republics have different rewards that acknowledge good works?.
