I'm one of those FOCs (if that stands for what I think it stands for!) and I've never heard of him! Had to head off to Google to find out who he was. A friend of that nice Mr Savile, apparently.

Did you live in Manchester in the late 70's early 80's?
Yep; born and and brought up in Moss Side, then Longsight from '62-'82. Don't remember his name though. Can recollect a lot of the Piccadilly Radio jocks at the time; Mathis, Sweeney, Davies, Peebles, Penk, Ward, Stannage, Brian Clark, Tom Tyrell etc etc. Even Timmy bloody Mallet. Not Teret though. Getting old, see/ Marbles rattling around up top.

Good point, I was brought up round the corner from where he lived and never really heard of him from a radio point of view. Terret Towers was the name of his place in Sale, knocked down for a block of apartments.

I just have a fucking great memory..............what's your name again.

Who is Ray Teret?

Ray Teret Born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, Ray had worked as a warehouse clerk, apprentice heating engineer and waiter at the Ritz Ballroom in Manchester before landing his job with Radio Caroline. Writing in Monitor magazine some twenty years later, Ray owned up to be being somewhat economical with the truth at his Caroline audition: “I said I'd worked in a Mecca dance hall for two years. I didn't lie to them. They never asked me if I'd played (any) records!” From waiter to broadcaster in one jump, he joined Radio Caroline North in August 1965, using his mother's nick-name for him on the air. He became known as “Ugli” Ray Teret. His theme tune was Jungle Fever by The Tornados but he also used The Ugly Bug Ball by Burl Ives. Ray invested the money he earned on Caroline in a boutique on the Isle of Man, which was run by his sister Janet. Through her brother, Janet got to know the other Caroline DJs and she fell in love with Mick Luvzit. Offshore radio's first and only on air wedding took place on 20th September 1966 when the two married. Ray had left the station by this time and has since been heard on both the BBC and commercial stations, notably Manchester's Piccadilly Radio and Signal Radio in Stoke on Trent. Ray has very kindly sent us a photo, taken for a national newspaper, of himself with The Beatles. (This photo is from ‘Happy Birthday Radio Caroline, 20 Years Old, Easter 1984’, published by Monitor Magazine. There is a more recent photo of Ray, taken at Caroline's 40th birthday party, here, and one taken at the August 2007 Radio Academy Celebration of Offshore Radio here. His website is www.rayteret.com. See also the Manchester Beat site.)

Nah, I'm a tea person.

I remember him fairly well when I used to go to the very popular "Birdcage" in Ashton Under Lyne around 1969.

There was a massive birdcage suspended over the dance floor where two scantily clad Go Go dancers used to prance about to the music.

Teret was sometimes the "guest" DJ who was billed as "Ugli" Ray Teret. Used to wear a yellow suit iirc.

He was very well known at that time.

He's resurfaced

Lad at work used to go out with the fit blonde copper when he was about 17, I asked if he'd shagged her his reply "No just gave her a good fingering"!!

Ugly Ray Terets Disco Express was the moniker he used around town late 60's early 70's. Dont think he was tied to any club but did spots at various places. His trademark was looking as much like Saville as possible and he used to drive round in an orange velvety material covered E type with the number plate ULGI 1. Think it was one of Savills old time drivers that topped himself just a couple of days after the Teret story broke. Have been away for a few days so have not seen the TV programme, The Detectives (BBC 2) look forward to seeing it on catch up.
