I think we need to not compare to Wirtz for the kids sake if nothing else. He either proves a success or not and how Wirtz does is irrespective.

We’ll be like the scousers trying to claim they got a better deal with Nunes and we see how that out.

Regardless of Cherki, I wanted Wirtz despite not seeing him loads, just the hype and the bits I have seen. It’s quite clear those in the game really rate him.

Wirtz either wanted Liverpool or we didn’t fancy the amount, which I can’t imagine Liverpool would spend much more then we would, so it does lead to the question.

Maybe, it’s that we thought it was a lot of money with wages to spend on a young kid, who has had a ACL and further knee injury this year. Not minded we have another midfielder who will have had a ACL.

In someways that might be why Cherki with price/ wage level and injury risk is seeming the better option or quite simply is just the second choice.

There is no doubt he has high potential, but let’s be honest if we got Wirtz and the scousers got Cherki, we would just find it funny if they started telling us how they got the better player etc (which they would be doing).

As City fans who rarely lose out, we can be better then that.

If you think the Daily Mails persecution of Raheem when he played for City didn’t have overtones of racism against Raheem and the owners of who he played for then I am surprised
I don't know why Daily Mail criticized Raheem. But i am well aware that phrases like 'overtone of racism' are just nebulous enough ro encompass nothing to everything.

Already, you've expanded the circle of influence. So criticism of Raheem is just not about Raheem but slso about the race of our owners.

Using that logic, any criticism of any of our players will have the overtone of racism as they all play for our owners.

In short, all of our players are beyond criticism because any criticism of them clearly may have the overtone of racism on account of the owners they play for...

Its all a bit ott if you ask me.

I think the problem is that Liverpools rebuild is alot further forwards than ours and tbh he’s not prior position as we need. Bite in midfield more . No doubt he’s a great signing for them but we have a lot of other positions to fill .

Tell you what, if you're not English (and I take it you aren't) your English is pretty bloody good! Congrats.
Thanks for that very interesting run-down on a player that most of us won't know a lot about. If he comes to play under Pep, he'll have to work. And there's really no room for divas. Not under the Catalan.
Talent is one thing. Seriousness and application is another. Benzema, as you will know, was in the academy with Ben Arfa. Benzema was always prepared to recognize that Ben Arfa, who he knew well, had greater natural gifts than he did. We know who had the greater career. Benzema simply had a level of application and determination that Ben Arfa never had.
If Cherki comes to us, it'll either be the making of him — or the breaking of him.

(By the way, if you're wondering, l'OL is my “other” club. Took my little son to Gerland on a number of occasions. First time when he was seven. Since I moved away from Lyon, more than twenty-five years ago, I've been far less often. But I have been out to the Groupama a few times. I shall always wish l'OL well. Not rooting for P.S.G. tonight! Forza Inter!).
Thank you :) 100% French here, never even lived abroad. I'm trying my best when it comes to English, I know that I make mistakes but as long as I'm able to get understood, it's fine.

Ben Arfa is probably the biggest talent ever from the academy. People who know both rate him even higher than Cherki. But poor old Hatem had several other issues which prevented him from being a true superstar.

Cherki showed this season that he is more a Benzema than a Ben Arfa which is very news for the sake of the game itself. There aren't so many artists nowadays. I'm rather satisfied that he's to be coached by Pep, it will force him to think team first.

Very nice to hear about the story of your son and Gerland. I miss our old grounds even if they were undoubtedly awful. The new Groupama is too far away from the town and the match day is experience is not my cup of tea. I loved walking to the center of the town on the Rhône River banks after the games. If you ever come to Lyon again, feel free to contact me, I'd be happy to share a beer together.

Hello there, I am a Lyon supporter. Just signed in to share some insight about Cherki as I could read the usual concerns about him, which are, to be frank, quite unfounded.

The main problem with Cherki comes from the fact that he had been announced as the next big thing very early on. When he was 14 years old, he played against players sometimes 3 to 4 years older than him, and he would still bossing them on the pitch, the gulf in talent being immense. He attracted interest from the biggest teams of the time, notably Real Madrid, which forced the then owner, Aulas, to give him a big contract as soon as legally authorized (the day of his 16th birthday) with the promise to be included to the first team. That's how he made his debut with the pros so young... and he rapidly showed how good he was during a cup tie in Nantes in which he scored 2 goals and delivered 2 assists.

But it was somehow too easy too fast. This game remained his best professional performance for years. Skipping the usual learning path for young players didn't teach him how to not rely solely on his technical skills on the pitch. He lacked that sense of team work and the constant commitment to find the most efficient solution even if it is not a flashy one. He is a baller, he loves it so this was what he was doing week in week out, showboating. But he was quickly found out. He could take on anyone but would be easily tracked back as he was always going to make the one touch too much. The quality was obvious but the end product barely existant. And as he is no natural sprinter and never had to prove himself on the dirty work, the combo made him look lazy and arrogant.

The negotiations for contract renewals have always been tight ones. The club couldn't afford to let him go for free, and his entourage used it as a leverage to get insane wages in regard of his actual contribution. Two years ago, in the midst of a very bumpy transition at the club, he changed his agents to be represented by the Mbappé family. Those are the people the new owner, Textor, referred to in very derogatory terms. Cherki now ditched (hopefully) the Mbappés, and I have no doubt the transfer will not be complicated.

But overall, he is a good character, very grounded, with a good education from his family. I very often sees that he is from Northern African heritage, which is true on his mother side (Algeria). But his father is from Italian ascent, and he played a very important part in Cherki's career. Rayan is quick-witted and sharp-tongue, and quite a leader for his young age. He sometimes appears very irritable on the pitch, but he seems a good teammate, he was very active for the send-offs of club legends Lopes and Lacazette.

This said, in all honesty, last year at the same period, I was certain his career would be a very disappointing one considering his natural talent. Even if he was only 20 years old, the fact that he had been around for 4 years without real consistency and long-term improvements in his decision making, I came to the conclusion he'd never sort things out. How wrong I was! What he did this season is really impressive, not only talent wise, but mentally. For him to be able to focus and be as sharp and as fit as possible despite all the pressure and the burden of the child star syndrome he suffered from, it is really remarkable. He's not only a great ball player but has strong mental resources. This point makes me confident that he is ready for the challenge in a top club in a top league.

He will have to learn to have less time on the ball, it might take a little time, but he will do it. In all honesty, I reckon that Guardiola would be a good and patient coach to let him settle in the Premier League.
Thank you so much for this information

I think him playing in the CWC is going to be a very good litmus test to see where he is in his development.

Can he go into the first XI right away or does he need a year to adjust?

I’m pretty ignorant on his ability but the fact we’re going after him this early along with who’s leaving leads me to believe he’s in the first XI unless we get someone else in that he’d rotate with.

think the quality and intensity of the CWC will be pretty poor tbh
