This Pep will ruin Cherki line in the media is wrong. All because of Grealish, I like Grealish but he's never been a goal scorer or top assister even at Villa, people speak of Grealish at Villa like he was one of the best in the league, he never was that player.

Multiple wingers have improved under Pep, Sterling, Sane , Mahrez, Coman , Henry etc this is from a Mahrez interview

Also Grealish didn't help it, with his partying.
Cherki on the ball is one of the best players in the world.
Grealish missed end of product.

This is the main problem we have and tbh I’ve been blindly hoping we have it under control!

All three of Ait-Nouri, Reijnders and Cherki are great going forwards but all 3 have the defensive side of the game as their main weakness. I saw a video from a Milan fan who was gutted to be losing Reijnders, talked for ages about how great he’s been and then said that the only positive on the pitch is that “at least we’ll be better defensively now”. So that’s a bit of a concern when you factor in that it’s going to take Rodri a long time to be in the right place mentally to trust his knee when going into challenges again. I don’t know what our plan is off the ball, but on the ball we’re going to be amazing.
A Long time mentally...Rodri ? Nah...

With more pace and agility throughout the team we should see an improvement defensively through that - more pressing higher up the pitch/winning the ball there - what we used to be good at. Also more recovery pace at the back/throughout

This is the crux of some of my niggling doubt.

It’s clear they are all great technicians, but it’s inescapable just how poor we can be in transitions, and that’s why I wanted to see a better balance of the physical and technical side in the team.

I guess the argument would be, the transition come about normally due too poor passes etc..which you imagine we’d have less off with these guys playing.

I’d like to see a RB who is physically excellent come in to readdress the balance.

Cherki will get the best out of other players, but to get the best out of Cherki, we’re also going to need able runners and workers behind him. Doesn’t matter about pressing and tracking back, we need more. Still think another midfielder will be brought in, someone with a real engine and a bit of snap.

Maybe I’m dreaming this up but I’m pretty sure I have heard/read the Lyon owner can be a prick to deal with, bit of deluarentis about him.

Fully agree. It’s been a concern for a couple of seasons, and I just pray that we don’t put the onus on Rodri. If we over play him, and we’ve been guilty of that with others, he’ll have problems and then so shall we. I can see Gibbs-White being an option, because I think he has the aggression, energy, and drive to drop a little deeper down the pitch, much like we saw with Fernandinho, but I can also see the sense in going for someone younger with a little more pace. The better we are off the ball, the easier it will be for Cherki and the rest on it.

We have players who have defensive nous: Rodri (of course), Gonzalez, and O'Reilly (who Pep has said is ideal for that role). I have seen a fair amount of footage of Reis too, and he looks very like John Stones in his ability to bring the ball into the midfield. I wouldn't be surprised if that is how he is viewed (CB/DM hybrid).

Aye, one thing you might remember was how annoyed all of the England fans were annoyed at Southgate for never picking Grealish to start, and only ever bringing him on as a sub. But the manager who works with him every day didn't think he was worthy of a start. At his best for us, Grealish was very much in the Gundogan mould of someone who keeps everything ticking over, and the sort of player that fans will appreciate, but everyone else will wonder what he contributes (until he's not there, and they suddenly realise). But he was never one to dribble through the entire defence. Honestly, his biggest attribute for us was his ability to (legitimately) win free kicks consistently.

bhayes:
Yes, I think so. Terms were already agreed and he just needs a medical
That is music to me. Thank you.
