We have players who have defensive nous: Rodri (of course), Gonzalez, and O'Reilly (who Pep has said is ideal for that role). I have seen a fair amount of footage of Reis too, and he looks very like John Stones in his ability to bring the ball into the midfield. I wouldn't be surprised if that is how he is viewed (CB/DM hybrid).
All good players and capable of doing a defensive shift, but the one thing lacking from them all is genuine pace. Of those mentioned, O'Reilly has good attributes but is young and needs another couple of seasons to build up stamina; whether he can pick up an extra couple of yard in pace is another thing. Rodri and Gonzalez are great on the ball but neither is capable of getting back 30-40 yards at pace, and while Reis looked assured on the ball, he didn't strike me as fast. Unless someone else is coming through the academy, and I don't think there is, we'll either have to ignore it again or look outside.

tbf can you think of defensive midfielder that is ridiculously quick?

Is it much different to the team that had a midfield of Fern, KDB, Silva? The key with that team was stopping transitions, the same will apply next season.

His level of talent scares me :(. Norice how everyone became 2nd fiddle once he showed up?

Even Mbappe was deferring to him. Everyone was trying to force the ball to him to create something. It was crazy to see. Hope he doesn't turn us into a 1 man squad. :(

Let the poor guy sign for us first before we catastrophise things?

KDB actually had electric recovery pace, which often gets overlooked.
Fernandinho wasn't slow by any means either, absolutely wasn't the quickest but had his tactical fouls (and pull over referees) to compensate with that.

As long as people can accept that he presses more like a Sane or Mahrez, rather than a Bernardo or KDB, then we'll all be very happy.

Give him the ball in the right positions and he'll be pure magic.
Yeah, i was watching closely. Granted France wasn't pressing after he came on, but it didn't seem like it was his thing :)

This is the main problem we have and tbh I’ve been blindly hoping we have it under control!

All three of Ait-Nouri, Reijnders and Cherki are great going forwards but all 3 have the defensive side of the game as their main weakness. I saw a video from a Milan fan who was gutted to be losing Reijnders, talked for ages about how great he’s been and then said that the only positive on the pitch is that “at least we’ll be better defensively now”. So that’s a bit of a concern when you factor in that it’s going to take Rodri a long time to be in the right place mentally to trust his knee when going into challenges again. I don’t know what our plan is off the ball, but on the ball we’re going to be amazing.
True this is why I stopped hating on MGW we need him. The guy runs. His a pretty good crosser/passer. And I just pray Forrest lower their fee by the end of the summer. But the club has to go pay 80 for Livra. Idk what’s going on with the keepers but I would still like a HG one.

Also Reinjders started out as a 6 played well, then played as an 8 and broke out then this season played really high up the pitch and got even midfielder of the year.

Also I think it’s important that we can’t worry too much about defensive issues cuz we’ll always have them. This new system with tucked in wingers and wingbacks has weaknesses like we will get hit hard on transition. But that will always happen. Thats just life. We need to remember that the main objective of football is to score more goals than your opposition and win the game.

But it’s true we do need a good duel winner, an engine.
