Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

we spent big in January because we made huge mistake not doing it in the summer before. and yes maybe not 7 but 4-5 serious players need to arrive in the summer too to continue the huge rebuild front of us. and it wont be the fans deciding this but Soriano and Khaldoon.
there will be 4-5 players leaving this squad in the summer at least the obvious ones the very least and the jury is out on some more like Grealish, Bernardo, Ederson etc, surely we cannot let the squad be that much thinner for next season. neither we cannot allow lesser players replacing them. so if 4-5 is leaving indeed like Gundo, KDB, Walker at the minimum, we need new ones in. otherwise we are back to square one and same thin squa

It's been a dogshit season, no doubt about that but remember that we are at the end of the cycle with most of the squad. Ederson, Walker, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Bernardo and maybe Stones could and really should be moved on at the end of the season. All have played a massive part in our success but time and injuries have caught up with them and they are now becoming detrimental to the team and at an alarming rate. But it is not only players who need to be moved on, it's also some of the backroom staff who need to be shown the door as well. Review, Remove and Replace. That's is what's needed. A major rebuild but a rebuild built on quality and spanning a couple of seasons and not a rebuild of panic buys and substandard players.

We need to address the issue of continuous injuries and the effectiveness of our medical staff dealing with them. I don't think we've brought back the likes of Dias, Ake, Stones, Akanji etc to the team fully fit and still carrying injuries. We can say we're unlucky but we should always be prepared for those situations occurring and have good enough players to cover those eventualities. Which leads us to my next point.

We need to seriously look at the underwhelming recruitment of players during the past 2/3 seasons and question our scouting system. We have replaced players leaving with players that are not consistent enough (Kovacic, Doku, Grealish) or not good enough to meet the challenge (Nunes, Phillips, Gomez) Or we have not even replaced those players who left at all. The sale of Alvarez and not replacing him immediately was bordering on criminal. Hopefully with the signings of Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Khusanov are portents of better days ahead but we need more players coming in and players of equal or better quality than the ones that need replacing.

Maybe we should start giving more game time to McAtee, O'Reilly, Vitor Reis and other promising youngsters as well.

We are in for a lean time in respect of winning titles but we also need to ensure the gap that is going to occur over the next season or two is not going to be a chasm that will leave us with little or no hope of catching up.
Absolutely on the money! If you want to compete with the Madrids, you have to buy best in class, and that’s not happened since Haaland.

We need players that improve the first XI now, and with the exception of khusanov (long term) none of the £200m spent in Jan does that.

We will get one more chance in the summer, and if we make a mess of it, expectation for the next years will have to be lowered massively.

No one's denying that Pep is one of the top 5 managers of all time alongside Cruyff, Michels etc
But tonight was fucking embarrassing.
This was a team with Ederson, Dias, Gvardiol, Foden, Gundogan, Stones, Bernardo, Savinho, Marmouch, Nico and Kusanov.

Most clubs would kill for that talent. But we were humiliated by not the best Madrid team.

Pep can no longer put the Lego together. It's time to go. All of you people who expect him to resurrect this sinking ship are seriously misguided. He was a serious upgrade on Mancini and Pellegrini but like them he's done
And your suggested replacement is who? Ten Hag perhaps?

We are missing one key player along with others at the end of their glittering careers or missing chunks of the season through injury. Not much Pep or any other manager can really do with that.

They have some of the best forward players on the planet, they will always score goals over 2 games.

Apart from defensive mistakes, I think the thing that really stood out for me over the 2 games was how Madrid were far quicker and more physical than us.

We have a way to go to catch them up again but I'm encouraged by the January signings but we also need a really good Summer window to top that off.

The club needs to be ruthless with players who are past their best, or just can't stay fit. Absolutely no point in delaying the inevitable.

We simply weren't good enough this season. We climbed the mountain last season to win 4 in a row. O
Shocking performance. Again.

Hiding to nothing with Gundogan and Bernardo stinking out the midfield. Think questions need to be asked of Pep for picking those 2.

Wank season.
There have been many wank seasons since 1982 when I first watched City. Since 2011 it's been a fantastic period, especially since Pep arrived. This team has just reached the end of their cycle. I have every confidence we will be successful in the future.

the hope is that part of the malaise is a lack of being bothered and if we clean out the dead wood it will be refreshed

ederson we know wanted to go, ortega will be planning his exit after sticking around reluctantly and probably under false assurances

de bruyne is one foot out the door, so perhaps is bernardo despite his protestations at the decline

Walker was our captain ffs and has pissed off embarrased

Foden isnt a leader in fact he shirks

Gundog knows the past is gone

rodri is not even here

what you are left with is two leaders (Dias and Haaland), a sicknote (Stones), then Akanji and Ake who werent exactly the senior guys anyway and then a collection of new guys/youngsters looking for guidance

When your line manager at work doesnt give a fuck its kind of demotivating and the stink spreads.

It is not the case of not being bothered but down to being mentally burnt out after previous seasons exploits on top of losing Rodri.

Pep's CL record:

2008-09 Winner
2009-10 Semi-final
2010-11 Winner
2011-12 Semi-final
2013-14 Semi-final
2014-15 Semi-final
2015-16 Semi-final
2016-17 Round of 16
2017-18 Quarter-final
2018-19 Quarter-final
2019-20 Quarter-final
2020-21 Final
2021-22 Semi-final
2022-23 Winner
2023-24 Quarter-final
2024-25 Not even last 16

Before City he didnt know what its like to not getting to CL semis at a minimum, he had that great record at the time. then few last 16 and QF exits at City some were bit underwhelming too like exits against Monaco, Lyon, Spurs all much lesser squads really outfoxing him.

then picked up with getting to the final in 2021 albeit that final still haunts me how the fuck we lost that to a Chelsea side nowhere near good to the Chelsea team from a decade ago. fucking Havertz, Werner, Mount and co and Tuchel outfoxed Pep there, while we were 20-25 points above them in PL nd Tuchel just got the job in January that season. in the final Gundogan starting at 6,Rodri and Dinho both on bench:(((((
how Chelsea won two CL's and both with interim /new managers taking over mid-season due to them being shit until that lol. when we will be that shit that we need to fire a manager mid season no way we gonna get close to a CL trophy lol.

then another semis vs Real in 2022 which was a real heartbreak and we deserved more and we were absolutely better than Real at home should have been out of sight but only won 4-3 and bloody hell we were 1-0 up in 90th minute away 2nd leg and we collapsed from 5-3 lead minutes before the end:((

then thank God the treble season happened, we steamrolled Bayern and Real on the way then beating a great Inter side in the final.

last year vs Real, we were bit unlucky we should have won at the Etihad but KDB missed a sitter and we failed the penalties in the end, but going out vs the eventual winner never troubles me that much as going out vs Lyon or Monaco who will then lose whoever they meet the next round...

this season, well actually the worst CL season for Pep in his career, not even last 16 stage first time ever for him, even brutal sweat to get out of league stage vs Brugge in last round, and quick exit vs Real and in the two games we were largely shit.
this could be made worse if next round Real is eliminated by Atletico or Leverkusen which would be close ties either way imo. they wont have it this easy vs Simeone or Xabi Alonso I am sure of that :(

Valverde said after the 1st leg that first time they felt comfortable playing City compared to previous years. even when we got the lead with the Haaland penalty they didnt feel stressed and turned us over in last 10 minutes. and they had even more comfortable game just now, ffs nnot eve a shooting attempt until 75 min?
who is the weakest La Liga team? those wil have more of a fight in them and more shots at Bernabeu that we just did...

this says it all, decent teams are comfortable and can sense our weakness & panic and punish us and play at a tempo we cannot. PSG, Arsenal, Real all did it big time. even lesser ones like Sporting, Spurs, Juventus could do it.
Bournemouth, Brighton, rags ffs...

Pep knew the starting line-up wasn’t going to do shit. Foden-Marmoush-Savinho with Bernardo and Gundogan behind them is shit. Not even 20 goals between all 5 of them for us this season and that’s what we relied on going to Madrid where we needed to win. Fucking laughable. And for Pep to say we had 1% chance of winning. Yeh that’s great for the players that is, god he’s been shit this year!

We were poor admittedly but BBC McNulty tearing us a new one…..never get this sort of poisonous reporting about rags demise…….****
They hail Madrid as being better than sliced bread & cheer them on in both legs and then go to town on us for having the temerity to get knocked out

Too many players have lost that extra 1% to be the best.

The humble players don’t want to run the hard yards chasing players down or getting back to help defence.

The rot is here and now.

Time we all put past success behind us now. Pep and the players need a reboot and the squad needs to rediscover its hunger and drive.

It will be very hard saying goodbye to a few really special players but now is the time. The summer exodus needs to be allowed to happen without sentiment.

7/8 players should move on:
Ederson/oretga
Kdb
Stones/ake
Kova
Walker
Doku
Grealish
Nunes
Gundo

Most of the above must go. I have not added Bernie as I think with proper young, hungry players around him again he will go up a level. He is running his bollox off now for a team that don’t have it in them.

This season could end up being a blessing in disguise.

When Pep said in the Press we had a 1% chance of winning tonight I didn’t realize that was also his pre match team talk to the players
I’m sure this is something that he’ll always regret saying. I mean, if your boss doesn’t believe in you you’re in trouble from the start.
