Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Without even trying too hard I can instantly recall 20 occasions (4 against the rags) when City have visibly run riot and then taken their foot off the gas with the opposition literally on their knees.
Subsequently 6-1 has finished 6-3 when 7-1, 8-1, or even 9-1 was on the cards.

Make no mistake, that's what Real Madrid did to us last night
They did. First gear in last 15 mins or so for them. Hence the reason we had a few attempts and scored. Had they kept going we would probably have lost 5-0. Men against boys last night.

Man city has dominated England and Europe for awhile, tough losss happen, but we take it on the chin, regroup, and come back stronger.
We've dominated Europe? Semi-final, final and winners. Meanwhile Real Madrid have won the bloody thing four times since Pep has been here and the dippers have won it and twice been runners up. They may have also reached the semis but I can't be arsed checking.
We'll come back stronger than this season, but only with a combination of the right players and tactics.

I was quite optimistic when I saw the team sheet.

Dropped one of his favourites (Lewis) for Khusanov who's much more equipped to deal with Vinicous.

But the shape we played was absolutely bizarre.

4-4 fucking 2?

With two players in their 30s who can't run. A young centre mid who looks promising, but isn't the most mobile, and has probably never played that shape in his life.

Playing Foden and Bernado as 1990s style wide midfielders expected to run box to box.

The midfield was so fucking flat!

And then two wingers up front with their back to goal who looked like they had no fucking clue what they were supposed to be doing.

Usually when Pep tries something different, I can at least figure out what he was trying to do.

Last night's set up, I have absolutely no clue. It was like watching the worst Pellegrini team surrender at the Bernabeu.

All I can say is Newcastle must be shit.
4-0 v Newcastle
3-0 v Forest
3-1 v Chelsea
2-2 v Arsenal
3-2 v Fulham

All shit including us. Arsenal excepted maybe.

They are home games against teams currently in the top 8 in the league. Curiously, we are 2nd in a mini-league of head to head matches between the top 8. Home and away. The team top? Arsenal, Liverpool? No - Fulham.

Football is weird. But no doubt we are shit.

You agree on dias.
Gvardiol can't defend in the position he is played.
And you watched last night's game and thought gonzalez was up to speed?
I said I agree Dias isn't fast
Gvardiol defends well mostly although played out of position
Gonzalez is a good player and he was left alone in midfield as Bernie and Gundo went missing.
You said Gonzales is unfit too.. Which he clearly isnt

Don't understand what the plan was for Savinho, last night. The re build looks bigger after last night and we need players performing at the highest level in the summer, not potential.
We need to inflict a few bloody noses before the end of the season to stop others from being disrespectful and retain some remaining fear factor.

Bernardo walked straight down the tunnel. Poor from him

Perfect representation of his ongoing sulk. On the pitch anyway. Spends most of his time throwing his arms around and arguing with Pep.

Hate to say it, as I love the bloke, but the best performance recently was Newcastle. Where he didn’t play. And it showed. Every attack was fast and direct, no player getting the ball and being scared to attack and instead pass backwards. That’s his MO.

It felt like we were set up to keep the scoreline respectable

Fair comment mate but, Real Madrid have a much easier ride the League is weaker and La Liga help their teams who qualify for the CL our shower couldn't careless.

Was a bad performance, but Pep should look at how teams are beating us, its not generally through having more of the ball, its a more direct quick attack, Madrid had nearly as much of the ball but were more willing to take risks in losing it by using long direct switches and balls into channels. Its basically what the scousers have been doing for years and teams like Bournemouth and Villa do as well. I am not saying copy them but take elements of that play (a bit like we did against the Toon) and integrate it into Pep style. We are so slow getting attacks going that teams have an age to get into position and set up, we have only been so successful as we have been better than the opponents but that gap is closing or has closed due to the age of the team. We need real mobility in the middle, Nico and Rodders should be a great platform, but we need a dynamic midfielder in the summer.
Good summation. The possession game, unless enacted by great players, has been overtaken by a solid defence playing rapid counter attacks. Athletic, fast, tall, strong, 90 minute players seem to be more efficient than pure footballers. It's become a bit like American football where a team needs one great conductor backed by 10 high class athletes. In some teams (Real Madrid, Liverpool) they do not even have a traditional creative player, just high class worker bees in every position.

You do realise we can't have a bigger squad than we have now, in fact for C/L next season as it stands we need to lose 2, plus lose Walker and Phillips.
I can’t see us replacing all those players, so won’t some need to stay?

Stop being stupid and castigating top players when we are missing players and have players who are too old to play at the Bernabeu

I think it’s time to put Josko in CM with Nico, someone with physicality and capable of winning duels. Maybe give the young lad a run at left back, O’Reilly.
