Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Good summation. The possession game, unless enacted by great players, has been overtaken by a solid defence playing rapid counter attacks. Athletic, fast, tall, strong, 90 minute players seem to be more efficient than pure footballers. It's become a bit like American football where a team needs one great conductor backed by 10 high class athletes. In some teams (Real Madrid, Liverpool) they do not even have a traditional creative player, just high class worker bees in every position.
“If you don't have a team that is filled with players who are at the elite level physically, you simply cannot compete. It doesn't matter how good you are technically or tactically. Neither of those two things, even the combination, can overcome substandard physicality - this is the trajectory of elite football”

Book I’m reading on coaching and it’s so true. You can’t help but feel we have been very behind the curve

Fair comment mate but, Real Madrid have a much easier ride the League is weaker and La Liga help their teams who qualify for the CL our shower couldn't careless.
This all day long. The top 2 have dominated that league forever and basically play in 2nd gear. If Madrid played here they'd have a fraction of their champions League titles.

Everyone clamouring for a massive rebuild but, and I know it's not going to happen, I'd be very interested to see what a different top class manager would do with our team. Could fresh ideas get some of our current underperformers back to their best.

It felt like we were set up to keep the scoreline respectable
Under Pep we've always been at our best when we're on the front foot and the midfield presses high up.

Usually that has meant one number 6, two 8's pressing high up and two wingers pressing the full backs.

I remember when Lillo came in the first time and we started playing two 6's and we became really passive and went on a horrendous run of form.

Pep came out at the time and said he "didn't recognise the team" and then he changed back to the high press, and I we went on a run of winning 14 games on the bounce or something stupid.

Against Newcastle on Saturday, we were back to high pressing. Front foot, young players pressing high up, loads of energy and pace.

And then for some bizarre unknown reason Pep didn't build on that massive improvement and instead reverted back to being flat and passive with older players in midfield who can't run.

No, we’d be worse. Pep is the best manager in the world, so anyone else would struggle with this current side.

Once Rodri is back next season, and after we’ve signed a right back and a world class attacking midfielder to replace KDB then we should be good again.

Oscar Pistorius has more legs than our midfield had last night. Bernardo and Gundogan were non existent, game just passed them by

Perfect representation of his ongoing sulk. On the pitch anyway. Spends most of his time throwing his arms around and arguing with Pep.

Hate to say it, as I love the bloke, but the best performance recently was Newcastle. Where he didn’t play. And it showed. Every attack was fast and direct, no player getting the ball and being scared to attack and instead pass backwards. That’s his MO.

He’s past it these days. Weak, slow, never much goal threat even in his best days. Needs to leave and make way for someone like Wirtz in summer.

Agreed

I turned it off and went to bed as soon as the third went in, something I've never done before.

It's more than manner of conceding such poor goals.

Each one was avoidable just by closing down quicker or doing basic defending.

The new boys were left hung out to dry by Pep and those who can't raise a gallop.

My biggest issue this season has been Pep's reluctance to be decisive, whether it be with substitutions or tactics during difficult moments?

If the solution was just buying a new team, then Pep isn't the manager I thought he was?

We need fundamentals and that must start with defending and attacking corners, being much better off the ball and, certainly this season, passing it with confidence.

I can’t see us replacing all those players, so won’t some need to stay?
No 5 need to go before we can even buy 1. My guess, Walker Gundogan, Phillips, Kovacic, Nunes . and we bring in a full back. Ater that one out one in, so then we are looking at the Grealish ,KDBs Bernardos of the squad. Before we even start on the 3 keepers.

let’s be totally honest we have been piss poor in this season’s CL campaign and got exactly what we deserved ……. Fuck all !
Its sums this season up in a nutshell for us but we move forward with the rebuild and look forward to the summer and next season. Last night was actually a great learning curve for our new young signings, they didn’t hide kept going and showed fantastic mentality in difficult circumstances. Nico got his goal in the Bernabeu and Khusanov showed unbelievable willingness mentality and pace ! This kid is quicker than Vini Jnr but the media don’t want to tell you that !!!

The chasm was immense

Where as will be forever thankful to pep, hes made dreams come true, but all good things do come to an end and im wondering if that end is getting nearer. Not now.
But no harm in thinking ,”would another coach be better for a long term rebuild?”

This season has been a mess with injuries, i get that. And the past 2 years recruitment has well n truly bitten us on the arse.
But peps been erratic too. He knows a million times more about football coaching than me, but id like to think i know enough. And many on here are puzzled by tactics, formations, and the glaringly obvious repeated ‘mistakes’ in starting 11s.

As paying match going fans we should absolutely be allowed to question EVERYTHING that goes on with OUR club without gatekeeping arse lickers abusing

The kids are already coming good, no champions league means rest and recuperation for our constantly injured players, make decisions in the summer and start again next season.
We still have the FA cup to aim for this season

Looking for the positives hindsight tells us it didn't matter that we pissed away a lead in the last 5 minutes at home, we would have gone out anyway.

Correct. At this moment in time they are streets ahead of us. Some small comfort though two years ago the roles were reversed and even last season we were the better side over two legs. Sadly we stood still while they improved. If they can do it so can we.

i think we knew we weren't winning the CL this season. Its incredibly difficult with a very strong team. So at the end of the day the history books will show that we went out to one of the all time great clubs.

Liverpool will be a free hit as we're expected to lose (hope we win). Then we can get our on focus properly on the top 4.

Starting away at Spurs (who will once again turn into Brazil)......

It's debatable whether he's the best manager in the world. He was for sure but so was Mourinho at one point and now look at him.
Wenger was very good until he wasn't. Ditto Clough. 3 managers who continued long after their sell by date.
With Pep we can't be sure although current evidence suggests he's at best confused.

With the rebuild you suggest we'll have a better picture this time next year.
