Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

This was a game I thought we'd set up solid and look to stay in the tie. How wrong could I be?! Pep got this wrong tactically and the players looked lost and confused. There are many talented players in this squad but tonight showed how far off the top level they are!
We did play to win but we didn't have the confidence to play our football at the Bernabeu

Absolutely terrible performance and set up. Never played a formation that we try out away at Real Madrid. Too many poor performances but that is down there in terms of not giving ourselves a chance. As an aside whoever is our set piece coach needs to go as we are one of the worse in the Prem.

Think I’ll stick with my earlier assessment - ‘shithouses’
Too many players coasting, doing the absolute minimum to get by.
No fight.
No desire.
No heart.
No pride.
I don’t give a fuck how shit we used to be or what we’ve won.
These levels of effort are totally unacceptable.
These players are on top money and at a top club and I expect better.
The club raised the levels to be elite and raised my expectations accordingly.
Now cos the players can’t be arsed the expectations are supposed to drop also?
Nah fuck that, I demand better.
We’ve built an elite mentality over a ten year period and this current lot have destroyed that in 18 months.
We’ve currently got a squad full of players who believe they’ve made it and that’s that.
We’re a lazy team.
Maybe Peps got too comfortable being here too long cos these players need a rocket up their arses and it doesn’t look like he’s able to motivate them, fire them up or even scare them into actually fighting to win a game.
He’s far from blameless too.
We’re currently piss poor in one of the poorest premier leagues I can remember.
Arsenal poor but the best of a bad lot.
Us poor.
The scum sacked a manager and poor.
Chelsea sacked a manager and poor.
Liverpool close to sacking a manager and poor.
Villa have probably overachieved but that’s more than likely cos everyone else is so shit.
Dogshit football with dogshit mentality.
I don’t even get angry anymore cos I expect this lack of effort, heart and desire.

This is ALL on Guardiola. ALL of it. I don't know what the hell he was thinking but he overthought it AGAIN, like he always does in the CL, every time.

Semenyo as a 10?? SEMENYO?? The guy can barely string two touches together and you play him as a 10 while Cherki - the most technically gifted player we have sits on the bench watching. Absolutely baffling decision, I'm sorry but that's just criminal.

And Savio starting again, why?? Why does this guy keep getting picked?? He was absolute garbage tonight, as usual.

We didn't score a single goal. Not one. Let that sink in. And then Pep doesn't even START Nunes who is probably the best player in the world in his position right now. For what exactly??

Second leg we can still turn this around, if they scored three then we can score four, but honestly this is a disgrace. We should have destroyed them tonight. DESTROYED them. Pep bottled it again.
His tactics are killing us, we need two defensive midfielders in front of this bag of shite defence. Why are we still playing this suicidal high line when week after week we get caught out. Haaland needs humbling by being dropped as he does not warrant game time from his performances, he does literally nothing to help the team, if you are not getting service then put yourself about, give the opposition something to think of

What doesn’t bother me is the actual result, as I never for one minute thought we were good enough to win the Chumps this year, it was just everything about tonight and the manner of the defeat which were so disappointing.
Let's be honest this current Bayern side would have destroyed us anyway and they will destroy Madrid.

You've hit the nail on the head.

I actually thought we'd get a result tonight with the form and injuries that Madrid are going through lately.

That tonight was absolutely awful, from the managers team selection to what the players delivered on the pitch. Absolutely nothing good came from tonight.

The players look bored shitless for two years now. That right there says it all.
As I said on an earlier post, Rodders summed it up for me, I kept pointing it out to the guys I was watching with, his head was down the whole second half, properly pissed off. Wasn’t good body language.

Feel like we felt they were there for the taking, but made a grave error. I thought 3-0 flattered Real at half-time personally - 2 worldies and 1 top finish after a lucky deflection. But, it was alarming seeing how quickly Real went from back to front against us. The high line with Guehi and Dias is criminal, and playing wingers, along with 2 central forwards is suicidal. Poor crosses cause transitions, and when you have zero legs in midfield, you cannot stop counters.

In addition, I think Assistant Pep has made us easier to play through. It's staggering how exposed we are when the first line of the press is beaten. Equally, our build up is terrible, and I don't think it is all on the keeper. We haven't found a way to counteract man for man pressing at all.

But, I think a lot of it comes down to extremely poor squad rebuilding. We have now signed a plethora of players who aren't at the level. Marmoush, Doku, Savinho, Reijnders, are just not good enough for where we want to be. It's debatable that Semenyo is - numbers wise he's been good, but i'm not sure he fits us all that well, and if his numbers just come at the expense of Haaland scoring, we are no better off. I'm not even that convinced on Guehi - because I don't think you can partner him with Dias and play a high line.

There is also a very serious question about Foden in there somewhere. Top players don't usually drop to his current level for almost 2 years and then recover from it. I don't know what's gone on with him, but nowhere to be seen tonight when we badly need a goal - pretty much tells you everything.

You watched us get totally outclassed
I posted in the match day thread that Doku is so very dangerous yet so very wasteful
I was commenting on Real not being as good as you think City and Pep’s selection and tactics gifted them the game yes, outclassed sure but not because they were class that was almost as bad by City as the game v the rags

It's not his fault really at the end of the day

I blame Pep's massive obsession with playing the guy

I can't believe am saying this but the best thing to happen this year was Savinho being out with injury to save Pep with trying to horse horn him in
I was surprised he started but playing him might not have been too bad had he stuck with the 3 in midfield that had been working very well. It’s not like he had Aguero and Tevez as his front 2 either. The pair of them struggle to control a ball at times and contribute nothing if they don’t score.

Was thinking after 20 odd minutes make the change to get O’Riley into midfield (as i’m sure everyone else was). Everyone probably also knew Pep would wait until h/t. The sub he made when we needed someone who would get about and put their foot in 2nd half was just as mind blowing as the starting 11.

I've watched a few games of Madrid recently and thought they were there for the taking, what an opportunity missed.
This one is on Pep, ridiculous lineup, square pegs, round holes, players in form on the bench and also what has happened to Haaland?
Haaland qualifying for the WC, signalled the end of his domestic season! Look at his record b4 Norway qualified and after, he's downed tools, doesn't want to get injured and miss WC!

Why move? There's no reason to move if he knows he's not gonna get the ball. He literally has nothing to do and he's not the type of player that can drop deeper.
Why cheat! Like he does on every single corner, standing static in the 6 yard box, knowing full well that he is isolated and effectively taking himself out of posing any threat…
