Real Madrid (A) - CL R16 Post Match thread

don't like to dig players out and its a team sport and everybody has a part to play and many on here jump at the first chance, yes mendy is not the same player defo lost some speed and mobility after his injury, will have to see in the summer and city need another left back anyway so maybe lets give him the chance to fight for his place, Gundogan is the work horse of the team does things that get your goat up and his passing is sloppy, am not his number one biggest fan but plays to a plan and does his job

last night the team played to a plan and stuck to it 100% yes again sloppy at the back and give them there goal, but we found a away and it was nice to see the officials being 100% fair and nobody can question the referee from last night, well maybe the real madrid fans can hahahaha

If you recorded the game, watch it again! He was playing too many loose square balls, which are exactly the kind of balls that kill us when we are trying to attack and they’re intercepted. He played one right in front of Pep and get an earful from both him and KDB! There was also another one where KDB leathered him for it.

Overall, I like him. But, he plays such a crucial role in Pep’s scheme that he HAS TO be more clinical with the ball, because he is rarely the player who has to work his arse off to win it back when he does give it away.
You are very inconsistent in your judgment of last night individual performance. Mendy wasn’t perfect by any means and like every player lost the ball more than I would like. He was though an effective outlet on the left, more so than Kyle, who I also thought played well.

Feel like we've barely seen Zinchenko this year. I suspect Cancelo will start but if youre Zidane that's a target area
I am unsure what Real Madrid have left. I thought they were good at pressing the ball. The way they got their goal was by pressing us in midfield, and that reminded me of Liverpool but they were very unconvincing in possession. They didn't have a way of hurting us when they had the ball.

I have watched some summaries from different studios who said that City were good but had we gone with Sterling and Aguero and played a more offensive game from the start we'd have won even more comfortably. For me, I thought Pep got the balance right between attack and defence.

I don't know this Real Madrid side very well but I am wary that they have a lot more to give.

He got all the calls spot on. Perhaps Mendy was unlucky to get yellow carded but he got the calls right and didn't rely on VAR.

I think VAR if it was harsh could have ruled out City's equaliser if they had wanted. There was the slightest of pushes by Jesus. I think it was right to allow it to stand. KDB's turn and cross was briliant.

I like to watch the game and also keep an eye on player interactions. They speak volumes.

I’m not sure what you mean by inconsistent. If you are comparing Mendy to Rodri, then I can’t help you. They play in distinctly different positions, do completely different jobs, and losing the ball in certain positions is more dangerous than others.

I’ve no problem with you seeing things differently than me.

FWIW, I think Walker has played very very well for about a month now, and last night was no exception.

I am comparing your analysis of one player with another, which was pretty obvious from the phrase ‘you are inconsistent’.

So what did Pep do he played two in front of the back four right? And made use of Benardo s running. He was paying them Real due respect. But what for the return leg? Maybe attacking them with both Sergio and Jesus.

Even in this game which was an excellent performance and result, there was still that trait of City getting into some good attacking situations and not making the most of them. Sterling and Mahrez both had chances where they could have done better.

This tie is now set up like the Man Utd League Cup semi-final and in the 2nd leg we dominated the game and yet wasted chances. We need to improve that aspect of our play. We doscore goals, but I think we can score more.

Who are they going to play instead of Ramos? Carvajal and Ramos looked uncomfortable against the pace of Sterling and Jesus. I should imagine Real Madrid have cover for Ramos and City probably know who it will be. I think who we play might depend on the attributes of Real Madrid's defenders. Age might be a factor against that side. It seems to be a side in transition wth some older players and much younger.

We deserved that win but I've seen many Champions League ties where the 2nd leg is nothing like the 1st which is often quite tactical.

Don’t really want to play semantics, but inconsistent doesn’t really apply if two players play in different positions and you are talking about the same skill/error.

Just as I wouldn’t complain that Sergio didn’t win a single header in a game compared to Laporte, so I wouldn’t compare the games of Mendy and Rodri.

Now, if you want to talk about Rodri versus Gundo in the game, where they’re being asked to do similar, if slightly different things, I can live with that.

Have a good day.

I think the set up ruffled RM and they were unsure of how to react and overcome it. We CANNOT be complacent in the next leg. They’re a wounded beast and totally capable of a turnaround.
Really hope that Eric’s injury isn’t too serious and it’s just a muscle twinge. He brings that air of confidence to the defence. We MUST bring in someone to partner him as a priority.
Gabby was brilliant and could easily have had a hat trick if he had been more clinical with his finishing.
I’m eating a massive slice of humble pie regarding Gundogan, he was very effective, mopping up the midfield while Bernardo was like a terrier, hassling the ball carriers all the time. His work rate was fantastic.
Nice little cameo by Raz, apart from his ‘passback’ to their keeper when he’d beaten their defence. Maybe he just needs to get that
hunger back and be ruthless in front of goal. Good that we rested KUN ahead of Sunday’s CC Final. He will be fired up for that.
Kev looked a little laboured late in the game, but his leadership was evident to see throughout. Time for him to take the reins after Merlin leaves????
Just wondering if there was any major CL games last night as the BBC must have lost their reporter, normally the dipper wankathon would be in full swing had they completed what we did last night.
Pots of boiling piss all over dipperville and Stadio Del Giro.

haha , the ref was fair

Tomás Roncero: I’m surprised he didn’t say “fam” and “blud” every second word with game analysis of that magnitude! Joke!!

Madrid got beaten, fair and square, and it could have been much, much worse. The video proves it, as do the stats!

Mendy both thrills and enrages me.
I understand his best work is done bombing down the wing and then crossing the ball in. That in part is why Sane doesn't work when they both play.
I loved his energy last night, and you can see glimpses of him returning to his devastating form.

However. There were times last night that i wondered if he had put someones elses boots on by mistake.
At no point did i feel comfortable when he was playing out from the back. Many times he couldn't seem to get the ball past his man. Simple passes just didn't work.

But, i still haven't lost faith in him. I think it is just a recovery and confidence thing. You can tell he is a passionate guy. A good guy.
I worried that the long injury has taken a toll, and his lower key media work is not good for him.
I loved the Shark team thing. It was a great way of galvanizing the team and fans.
Some thought the media work was distracting him from performing. I think with him it works the other way round.
I'm glad he is back in the team. And i hope he comes up with some more crazy media stuff soon!

More of the same in the second leg, they have to come at us. The discipline in the shape City played in last night was fantastic don’t be too adventurous and make sure the full backs don’t vacate up the pitch.

We didn’t seem to have an out ball in the first half but when Sterling came on it gave us the platform to really go at them. The tie isn’t over let’s hope the players keep the intensity and concentration there for the second leg.

Is it just me or was the VAR much better and more efficient in these European games than in the league?

IFAB certainly have a far better implementation of it so far and they have told PiGMOB countless times to fall into line and each and every time they have been ignored.

Why is that PiGMOB?
