Real Madrid (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

Careful, you'll upset a few on here with that statement. According to some we've made progress getting hammered 5-1 over two legs. So so proud
I'm agnostic about it all really. I accept we are in a rebuild with these charges hanging over us. But three years ago these clubs were seen as evenly matched heavyweight boxers where even when we lost it I was heavy blows in the final rounds. We haven't laid a glove on them for a few years, if it was the other way round we'd be laughing at all the talk of being equals. The way some of us talking it's like it's 2013 again and it's just nice to be involved.

Hopefully changes will be made. Lack of sufficient quality throughout the squad is a huge problem.

We're a top 6/4 side atm but no side is much better than us in the premier and i include Arsenal in that in spite of their healthy lead at the top.of the table. This present Arsenal team has been together about 4 years, maybe more and have now matured. In contrast we are rebuilding with many players who haven't played together before. We have the nucleus of a decent team but we need one or two really world class players to get to the very top again. The problem is who and can we sign them?

A few skirmishes after the game, a bunch of Madrid fans ran onto the matchday bus 5 after getting involved in some post-match street ballet with some young Berts.
They were eventually ‘escorted off’ by one of the Didsbury lads

We did beat them earlier in the competition, when it didn’t matter as much

You know they beat us 2-1 on the night?

Apart from the first 10 mins where we couldve had 2/3 goals, they carved out as much as us. If not more.

They played that game in 2nd gear.

They had at least as many big chances as we did, and as you say they didn’t need to push it last night.

It’s only one instance, but to give that chance up to Valverde in the very first minute is very concerning.

After what happened last week, you would have thought that a ball over the top for Valverde to run on to would be something we’d be alert to. But he just ran through, completely unmarked, and should have put it to bed inside a minute.

Defensively we’re lacking proper structure and discipline, and it’s been that way for at least two seasons now.

It's been happening for 18 months - if we haven't picked up on it in that time, just one other example last week is hardly likely to be any sort of epiphany, really.

I shared your frustration at that moment, though - it really makes you wonder what sort of preparation goes on during the build-up and in the final few minutes.

We have always been led to believe that City is a well-oiled machine, with no detail left to chance. Questionable, that.

You go to places like the Bernabau, you can’t get into an open game with them when the tie is on the line. Last week was way too open, Pep was way too attacking and it left lots of space to exploit. You need to turn games like that down to walking pace and then hope you get an opportunity to put a chance away.

We played with a lot more urgency last night and moved it quicker, which was sadly lacking in must wish games like Notts Forest and West Ham. As you say last night the through hall was always on for Madrid as our players tired they exploited it.

Without Khuzza it would have been a bloodbath, and big Donna turning into a flapper just before WWEnal is worrying

Encouraging performance last night, we were better than them for long periods despite being a man down.

But it just makes the first leg team selection all the more infuriating.
Despite the scoreline we played with more passion and had we had a sniff of good fortune, not counting the sitter Valverde missed after a min, we would have been two or three up by the time the penalty was conjured. I'm still convince twelve hours on that there were two offsides in the build up confirmed with the lino. Why did we not see anything on the screen confirming an onside? I'd willingly have stumped up the ticket money again for a front row seat at Tyburn to see that bastard in the yellow swingin' in the breeze.

I aboslutely hate seeing City fans talk us down.

That was not a team "playing in second gear". That was a team who tried to contain 10 men and couldn't. This is not the Real Madrid of old. Whilst we aren't the City of old, I am absolotely convinced having played them three times this year that we are at least as good as them and given the rub of the green (and better team slection) would have knocked them out of this tie.

I'm just a bit unsure about Rodri full stop - his ability to run midfields at the mo. The immediate reaction is yes, let's play double with Gonzalez and Rodri, take the pressure off both and shore up midfield, but i think Pep is very concerned about the lack of creativity that will produce, in a side that is perhaps already struggling to convert a decent amount of chances.
Not sure about that, he tends to leave our ONLY creative player on the bench.

We obviously had to be more open last night and Khusanov excelled, but I still can’t believe that we gave up that chance to Valverde in the very first minute.

If you watch it back, no one picked him up or got close to him and Dias didn’t even know he was there. All after he scored a hat trick last week making runs from deep.

It’s supposed to be the CL, the pinnacle of the sport, but you’d be disappointed if a pub team defended like that in minute one. The whole team lacks focus and we keep letting soft goals in almost regardless of the personnel.

well that's true perhaps. When we went to 10 men with Reijnders, Doku and Cherki, it looked like melt central. Doku really mucked in, but the other two are a bit shy of tackling. Everyone worked hard though, but Reijnders and Cherki are not natural tacklers!
