It's true - that was shambolic defence-wide.

But as far as RAN was concerned it wasn't a one-off. I highlighted his role because it was typical of his play all season. The ball is like a magnet to him, at the exclusion of anybody he should be watching.

There is simply no excuse for being so oblivious to his duties. You are apparently prepared to overlook this massive flaw because of his party tricks, but if we want to challenge the top teams, it'll cost us time and time again.

You cannot afford to have passengers playing in defence.

How can anybody watch him during that piece of play and dismiss it so lightly?

As I said previously, I have also pointed this out when we've won - including when keeping clean sheets - because some on here seem to think that because we keep the odd clean sheet, we must have defended well in that game - even when the opposition have missed a few glaring opportunities.

We'll just have to disagree about what a defender's priority should be.

Pretty sure that the club knew all about his defensive frailties before signing him.

Pep clearly thinks his forward play outweighs his shortcomings.

Put Gonzales in there depending how we play the rest average and I include Haaland in this. It’s no surprise we look far more threatening when he’s not playing.

When you face Real Madrid or the so-called elite clubs its always the same old shit ?
You need to take every chance you get because you know they will get help and the benefit of the doubt from the officials.

This is why Manchester City have to be almost perfect in both legs and we have only done it once in Pep's 10 years at City in the Champions League. This City squad are not the finished article and can not produce the goods every week because it's still in the early stages of a new build, the squad is still top-heavy with players that offer nothing ?

This summer has to be the major clear-out of the likes of Stones Ake Grealish Lewis Kovacic Phillips and also Silva who is leaving anyway

We have the base and foundations and 4 or 5 new faces in the summer and i think we will be ready

Haven’t we done it twice? In 2020 we beat them 2-1 both homer and away though thr legs were played about 6 months apart. Then was the unforgettable semi of 2023 : 1-1 in Madrid and then the result we needed last night at our place. And we ain’t finished yet!

You would hope that they must have done, but which itself is strange, considering how unadventurous Pep generally is, certainly of late.

Why do you think that he doesn't give the same latitude to Cherki? Presumably they scouted him as well?

If we had taken our earlier games more seriously, and finished a few places higher, then we wouldn't have played Madrid in the Last 16 unless they had performed even worse.

Arsenal got an easier run because having finished top, they deserved to get an easier run.

Liverpool topped the group last year with a 100% record, but went out in their first knock out game, to the team that finished 15th only scraping through in the last group game, who then surprisingly went on to win the competition.

I we’d scored perhaps another goal or held on in Monaco; or Madrid gained another point we wouldn’t have met. Performing well in the group games gets you into the last 16, but it’s pot luck as to your next opponent.

I am really confused as to why Haaland and Rudiger did not go head to head this season as they have clearly had a battle going on since Haaland has joined us. By that, I mean an outbattling competition.

The first game it looked liked Haaland was dropping deeper to lure Rudiger out (which seemed like a Pep strategy). For me, Haaland and Rudiger was a battle that keeps having to be fought until Haaland overwhelming wins/dominates. Maybe I am simplifying things.

Arsenal will destroy us from corners unless we spend the rest of this week practicing our defensive setup for them. It's so easy for the opposition to find space. We don't track people, we don't defend the space either. And when we have them we seem to have no strategy for what we're going to do. Haaland isn't the best in the air granted, but he seems to sacrifice himself by just standing still in a certain area and the quality of our deliveries is generally pretty poor as well.

Last night we ended up taking them quickly and even then didn't put the ball in the box because we clearly know it's unlikely to amount to something.

Haaland by far is our best defender of set pieces

It's not an exact science, but the odds of getting an easier draw (regardless of whether you win) become slightly better the higher you finish.

That's true, but it also depends on how others play and finish too.

It's (imho) a terrible format now, firstly it makes players play too many games, but the random nature of who plays who (and when), makes it a bit of a lottery all round.
