Real Madrid post match thread

Shit banner.
Bringing Rico on was the worst sub I can remember for a while.
Ederson mistake changed everything.
Wow, we are so tired.

Couldn't be more proud of what these guys achieved over the past few years. Everyone is clearly tired.
If Ederson didn’t fuck us up with that stupid kick for their second goal then that third goal doesn’t happen. Agree it changed everything,

it's crucial we save our season, we need top 4/5 so we can give our ground over to tourists again next season, here's to the europa league, fuck save the season, let's save our identity
Big call out to all on Bluemoon: if you know any rags, Spuds or Rangers fans, please ask them if the Europa League is also plagued with tourists.

Still a touch traumatised at that ending last night. Albeit it was pretty inevitable. I think we are all hanging onto the thought it will come good. But it won’t. It’s the end of a truly unforgettable era. One to be treasured forever.
It’s time for an overdue rebuild. Kev Bernie Eddie Walker are legends but times up. Those too injury prone and thus unreliable small squad members also have to go (sorry Johnny that probably means you). Rebuild started too late but now doing so. Not sure how good these new kids are.
Forget this seasons champions league, maybe have a decent FA Cup run, but focus everything on ensuring top four. And go again next season.
Last years four in a row was a great achievement by Pep, maybe his finest, as all of this seasons implosion was there and he dragged us over the line. But now is his biggest challenge as we cannot carry on with the previous style of play unless these new lads get it straight away and it often takes the best players a season to do so.
But whatever CTID.

It gets to the last fifteen minutes in games and a sickly feeling grips both the players and the crowd. It's become a curse now, a mental affliction we need to rid ourselves of asap.
Either Pep has to tell them or the players have to take it on themselves to put safety first at the end of games. No trying to be clever as in Kovacic's flick to Rico, no dawdling on the ball, no stupid back.passes just get it upfield or in row Z. We haven't got the stamina or the confidence of old to see games out the way we used too, take no fucking risks, safety first.

Imagine you’re one of the players, after all of these capitulations and terrible performances, and you’re finally looking better and are beating Real Madrid.. but then you see two of the main culprits behind these awful performances come off the bench in Rico and Gundo. What does that do to your head/nerves? Why are the same players still coming on to the pitch and doing the same brain dead mistakes, or showing that they can’t run, or don’t have the physicality?

No doubt Nunes will be at RB on Saturday and we can do this all over again.

after that capitulation, if I’m Pep then I’m thinking of leaving in the summer. I’m not sure he’s got it in him to build another new squad from such a poor starting point. Especially as he’s only got two years left. I hope he stays, but surely he’s questioning.

I expect has amore pragmatic view and an see the positives of last night

It just comes down to most of the team no longer being good enough, either because of age or just not the standard required.

Kev, Bernie, Gundog, Kovacic, Eddie all need to go in summer as they’re done here now.

Real Madrid/Bayern level signings needed in summer, fuck net spend.

Not a hugely shocking result given some of our performances this season.

There's been a bit of a mentality shift and a lot of lapses in concentration undermined a fairly solid performance last night.

I think Stones, Grealish, Savinho can all hold their heads up high.

Have to question those pep changes though, the amount of games we've lost when bringing on Gundo/Lewis, and moving Stones back to CB when he was performing solidly as the 6.

Great game of football for the neutral, unfortunately. They're always fairly high quality games as you'd expect.

Pick ourselves up and go again.

Good post. It seemed to me it was like the last hurrah for some of the old favourites and they weren’t quite up to it, including Pep.
I think a lot of the criticism is harsh. We played well first half and Stones was superb but when you are watching their front 3 you see how quick, skillful and dynamic they are - it’s not like we’re playing the dog and duck. But how many times have we seen the Rags give up chances but get away with it and sneak a win? And that’s where we were with 5 to go.
Ederson just cocked up for the second, I can’t explain it and the 3rd was a calamity of errors although why Ederson charges off his line when Dias was hassling Vinicius is beyond me.
Feels like he’s at the end of his time as is Pep. As said before I thought for decent parts of the game we played well, worked the ball through midfield but sadly there was no magic from KDB or Savinho despite both working hard. Kev looks finished at this level and an inform KDB of even last season might have given us the 2 goal lead we needed but it’s not there.

Can't find a video of this, but how and why this wasn't a penalty to us I've no idea. Lewis got totally taken out by the late challenge.

Love great supporters like you. We played a very good team last night. Yet, we should have won. Eddie made 3 superb saves & one error led to a goal. Rico made a few fantastic tackles on “entitled Jnr” and was caught out once. Yet you give them shit

Stop questioning Pep -
Jack had a great start then the injury curse struck again - ditto Akanje. Ake had to be protected after coming back after injury. What could Pep have done?

Ederson should have caught that ball and done a Pickford. Dropped to the floor and wasted a minute instead of being a twat

That's exactly what's needed at the moment. Waste time, shitehouse, anything to get games over the line. The amount of games we've lost in the last few minutes rushing and taking risks when we don't have to is ludicrous.

They also rarely felt the need to put all 10 of their outfield players into our final third, which is something we’re absolutely obsessed with and which finds us out every single week. I cannot remember the last time any opposition didn’t have at least one occasion where they were running directly at our goal with us looking like the keystone cops chasing them!
To compound that, we play so, so slowly that the pushed up back 4 have loads of the ball but, save for Stones, cannot play a 40 yard pass (not a criticism, as they’re defenders).
Erling must make 30 forward runs every match and rarely does anyone even try to find him. One of the problems though, and it was hugely noticeable last night, was we had Erling making a forward run and they had M’Bappe, Bellingham, Vinicius and one other all trying to run forward, meaning covering was almost impossible. Bit like we used to do!!!
Our default pass (and Lewis is especially culpable in this) is backwards. Make a mistake with that pass and we’re all running backwards and they’re all running forwards, which is never a good thing.

Finally, for the last half an hour it looked like they had at least one extra player, which is never going to end well…
yes this was quite evident last night, i felt they had overloads all over the place.

Having a night to think on it, there were some good points. I saw a little glimmer in that game, a lot of running and desire and some good work with the ball. Real Madrid have done this same thing to our best teams, it's just the manner of us losing this season is just too frequent now that it's not a coincidence. With 4 cb's at the back we were really good, bar some bozo moments. Unfortunately we know the problem in the middle, when Rodri is there he provides the passing lanes, moves people about and will put his body in the way of tackles to get fouls when we need it most. For instance the Ederson one, i think if Rodri is there he comes shorter for it to make it simple. The Kova ridiculous karate kick pass to Rico, i think Rodri just lets it bounce and guards the ball and gets a foul and i think a real right back puts his head where Rico tried to kick it and gets a foul. These small moments throughout the season of poor decision making where we have been really good there have cost us. We know the names that aren't up to these types of games anymore unfortunately, but Pep has built up huge relationships with them and i guess that's hard to break now.

We need (and deserve) to be out of this competition, regroup and get more time on the training ground and in recovery. Finish strong and work for next season.

Agree we need to bring a bit of gamesmanship into our game like every other team does - this is probably what’s missing (along with a fully fit squad)
