Rebuilding the Squad

Roberts would benefit from a year on loan in the Premier League next season. I think Zinchenko and Mooy could be good squad players though.

I think out of all of our loanee's Mooy is the one that I hold the most hope for, he is getting rave reviews in the championship and he holds a uk passport I believe.

There's a mammoth rebuild needed.

1: Bravo needs to go. He just does. He's not built for this league. Top keepers make big saves in games they're hardly called up on and communicate with the defence. He has good handling abilities but he's small and isn't able to cover the goal well enough. Even the relatively straight forward tip over the bar (for a normal sized keeper) today near the end ended up needing to be a full stretch save. He just doesn't have the length or wingpsan to make the goal look smaller. On top of that, his distribution with anything over 15 yards is really poor for someone who is supposedly world class with the ball at his feet.

2. The full back line with the exception of Stones and Kompany need to go. Bearing in mind Kompany is never fit and I'd only actually keep Stones based on his potential and the fact we have shelled out £50m for him, you get the idea about how poor we are at the back personnel wise. That's the problem when you pay top whack for potential. You don't get a world class player, you get a player that may or may not end up being world class in the future. Presently we have an inconsistent player who is still displaying the same type of form that had him in and out of the Everton team.

3. We don't have a midfield. Gundogan was always a risk with his fitness record. Delph and Fernando aren't good enough. Yaya and Dinho are both in the latter stages of their careers. Dinho isn't a good fit when he has a very reactionary defence behind him (given that he himself is very reactionary and leaves us vulnerable to the counter by trying to engage in 30/70, 40/60 and 50/50s without having any awareness of the gap he is leaving behind him). On top of that, his discipline is appalling this season. Silva seems past his best and KDB as good as he is is also fairly inconsistent. He can have a quiet game but get a couple of assists and we all rave over it, but we really need to find a way to get him at the centre of what we do more often.

4: We are fairly set in attack. Obviously Navas needs to go and I don't think Nolito is any better than squad player level. Nacho is a work in progress but we can't complain about his production when he's called upon. He's frustrating at times but his record is unreal really. I'm not sold on Sane. Again we have paid top whack for potential when it may or may not work out. I'm more sold on Sterling although if we are being real, we need to be getting more from him in terms of goals and assists. Us signing Sterling and Sane when we did would have been a bit like Madrid signing Ronaldo or even Bale before they actually had their breakout seasons where they scored getting on for 30. They waited for the right moment to sign both players whereas we have gone a year or two early on both (and Stones for that matter) probably out of fear of losing the opportunity to get them in). So in the meantime we are frustrated because we want them to contribute at 40m level but it's not always possible. Sterling is by far the closest out of the 3 but as I said earlier, will he ever be at a point where he is putting up Bale, Neymar, Dybala numbers? I hope so but I couldn't say so with any conviction.

So all in all we are half a team short and the other half is made up of a couple of genuine world class players, young inconsistent players who may or may not end up being consistently world class and other players who are a couple of seasons past their peak.

We are a couple of seasons away from having what we need and that's frustrating because Pep might not be here for much longer than that.

The fact that we didn't reinforce our defence with two new full backs in the summer bemuses me. Although It may just reflect our general buying policy which id rate 'slapdash'.

Let's face it, this team needs major major surgery and It's going to take at least two or three years (4-6 transfer windows) to sort out.

If it wasn't for our desperation for new defenders/midfielders I've got a feeling aguero would go in the Summer as well. I don't sense the love between player and manager at all.

How I see the job that should be done:

--------------------------------------------------bravo-----------------------------------------------------------
RB--------------------------otamendi---------------------------CB------------------------------------------LB
---------------------------------------------------CDM-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------debruyne(C)-----------------------gundo-----------------------------------------
----------------sane-----------------------------aguero------------------------------Jesus--------------------
----------------nolito-------------------------unal/kalechi-------------------------sterling------------------
---------------------------------silva-----------------------------garcia-----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------dinho---------------------------------------------------------
clichy-----------------------kolarov----------------------------stones--------------------------------maffeo
-----------------------------------------------------GK-----------------------------------------------------------

So, main issues:

1) Debruyne as a captain, for me it's difficult to watch when in one match zabaleta is a captain in the second silva in the third dinho and so on.
2) Clichy as a sub LB, kolarov as fourth choice CB, maffeo deserves chance and garsia also
3) Bring unal back as fourth choice CF (Aguero, Jesus, Iheanacho, Unal)
4) dinho and silva as a reserve midfielders, new CDM is required.
5) So team needs to buy 2 full backs, one central midfielder, one central defender and reserve GK.

If good players arrive, all the problems club had this year will be solved.

After that maybe club should look at the progress of Jesus and Sane and if needed after one season buy more experienced wingers, but in current situation it's not a problem.
Good fullbacks mean more chances, more possession, less conceded goals and more points.

Agree with a lot of this, besides Augero and KDB we have no one in their prime, they are either potential or on the decline.

Bravo needs to go, Fullbacks need replacing, Stones need a solid partner, Midfield needs overhaul, too many not good enough to begin with (Fernando, Navas) or not good enough anymore (Silva, Yaya) and we need another top striker.

Massive rebuild has to happen. Players that CAN NOT play a significant role next season; Bravo, Zabaleta, Clichy, Kolarov, Yaya.

Players that are playing now who can survive another season or 2; Otamendi, Sagna, Fernando, Fernandinho, Silva, Navas, Nolito, Aguero.

This summer it's pivotal we concentrate on defence and midfield. 2 left backs, a right back, a centre back, a defensive mid and a centre mid. Nasri back in the squad would be welcomed too.

Good post. One of the disappointing things this season has been the form and discipline of the senior players and they're costing us. Time for half a rebuild.

Totally agree with all the above posts. I cant believe how bad our squad planning has been in preparation for Pep reign here. I genuinely feel sorry for him that he has so many poor players to work with. We all know him to be a great coach but you have to have intelligent players to get your ideas across. We're now faced with an almost complete rebuild of a new team. This one we have now is clearly not good enough for top 4 let alone challenging for the top spot. Lets just hope Pep sticks around to conquer the English Premier league before he goes.

I agree about the bad planning, we knew about Peps pending arrival 2yrs ago yet we still spent large amounts of our transfer budget on Mangala and Bony, two obvious players that wouldnt suit peps style
