Recession what recession?

It's up to them but I just don't get it. If I was obscenely rich my conscience wouldn't allow me to do that sort of thing, if I bought a £25,000 bottle of champagne I'd instantly be racked by guilt thinking about the people that sort of money could feed. Do any of these young and rich socialites use their money for charities and helping the unfortunate? They have my respect if so.

There are two entirely separate arguments here, at least as I see it.

Firstly is the gap between rich and poor. It would be an entirely unreasonable person that stated that this was not unhealthy in our country and the world as a whole. I hesitate to say the western world because this difference is at its most accentuated in the second and third world, especially in emerging nations like Brazil and India. Capitalism throws up and entrenches these gaps in wealth and it is the job of governments to try and close that gap without affecting their own countries' competitiveness. The US is notoriously bad at it, we are marginally better, but there are other counties in Western Europe that probably get the balance right, like Germany.

The second argument is what the very wealthy do with their money once they've got it. As far as I'm concerned there are far less productive ways for society than for them to spend their cash in this way. The money spent on the meal will go in the owner's pocket (and doubtless the waiting staff would have received a large tip). He, like the people who spent 150,000 Euros, does not live in a bubble. It is unlikely he will put that money under his bed. He may go out and buy a new car, for example, and the rep who sold it to him will get a commission that means he, in turn, might buy his girlfriend a new bracelet - and so on.

I find spending vast sums of money on champagne to be comical and the height of vulgarity, but it is better that the very rich do this than leave their money sat in a bank account, especially if the economy is ever going to get moving again.

Just thought I shove another comment in here. I am self employed, a firm I do work for asked me to do some work on the Olympics. I worked weekends and long hours. I made extra money. I used some of that money to take one of my sons to Madrid, I am also treating the other one to Ajax.

Two things: Isn't that like a self made millionaire giving money to his sons and yet 'everyone' seems to begrudge them when it's done. The amounts are different but the principle the same.
Secondly, am I wasting my money? Whilst I couldn't feed an entire african village for a year I am sure it could be put to good use.
Third, if the african president stopped spending all that money on a private jet, tanks for his soldiers and champagne for his wifes, couldn't he feed his own people.

These are the people who the tories gave a huge tax cut to. The reason they can do this is because the twats do things like taking benefits away from people with cancer.

Im not against rich people,im not jealous of there wealth,im happy with my lot, but as GDM says the gap between righ and poor is growing and that reflects poorly on society. The best societies are the more equal.

bon_et_copieux My weekly #trustfund #cheque... If you're wondering what I do with it, I put half in my checking account and the other half in my charitable trust to help causes that I believe in...

Some seem to be trying to help.

Ah the old 'it's the Tories that are to blame for everything' line and when someone mentions the War Criminal Blair and Labour we get told he wasn't true Labour and neither was his party. So let's tax all the rich and give it to the poor and when we have an equal society where everyone earns the same amount of money as everyone else and nobody is allowed to earn more than anyone else the revolution will truly be complete.

Totally agree, jealousy is exactly what it is, I don't care if they earned it , was given it or even if they nicked it, what they choose to do with it is their business, good luck to them !!

That's utter bollocks. And it's hardly a tax cut, they are still paying 45% - which is 5% more than they were paying 5 years ago anyway.

The top earner tax will likely not affect any of those being pictured as they will more than likely be living in tax havens or if not, be earning dividends rather than "income".

The Tories cut the tax. Nobody else. Blairs new Labour was not a party i could identify with anymore than i can with the Tories.

Where did i say the rest of your post?

Good for them, it's their money they can do what they want with it.

Anyone whos criticise's them is simply jealous.

Which is 15% lower than that what Thatcher taxed the very rich at. And 35% lower than the tax rate on the rich when America experienced its best growth figures.

As for Tax Havens they are a blight on the world, there existence means that you SWPB pay more tax than you should have too.

I'm sure the kids that are dying of starvation every day while these ***** blow £100k on lunch, don't give a shit if you think they're jealous.

Do you have a season ticket at City? £500
Do you have a PC or laptop? £500

How many food packages could that buy starving kids? Don't you feel ashamed spending money on something you don't really need whilst some 6 year old on the other side of the world hasn't eaten for 4 days?

What's the difference?

-- Sat Sep 22, 2012 6:21 pm --

Rascal, i've never understood people with your views. Why should the rich pay higher tax than me and you?

I agree about tax havens, they are a pain in the arse, however it does not negate the point that the top rate of tax being at 45% from 50% will not make a blind bit of difference to these people and their kids so trying to crowbar it in along with a dog about the emotive subjects of cancer and benefits was a little below your usual standards.

Fairness i suppose.

If they didnt you would have to pay more. Everyone bar the 1% would.

But the way i see it, you are punishing those who are talented and have worked hard. If i was to start my own business and work my bollocks off to make it successful, i wouldn't think twice at trying to pay as less tax as possible even if that included off shore accounts. I'm not working hard to pay half of what i earn back to fund others. That's my view anyway.

Simply because they can afford to.
