I drive an old shape XC90, ancient now and will have to get rid soon for the emissions etc but that's the only reason, could probably do another 100k hassle free. The independent Volvo guy who's serviced it for years reckons the 2nd generation XC90s have been a nightmare until fairly recently. Electrical systems and build quality meant lots were in and out of the garage all the time. Apparently they sorted it and much improved now.

How’ve you found the Haldex on it? Can be prone to throw a hissy fit if they’re not serviced, which Volvo in their infinite wisdom claim you don’t have to as it’s “sealed for life” which really means “sealed until the warranty runs out”.

Touch wood never had an issue to my knowledge, vaguely remember a few years back the anti-skid service light going on but don't remember it costing an unpleasant amount so doubt it was the unit itself. I know they kept 'upgrading' them to make the initial traction kick in better but I'm sure I read somewhere that the latter ones were more problematic than the earlier ones. When we started using an ex-volvo independent he seemed to be way better than the dealerships so over the years pretty much taken on trust anything he suggested.

I think that happened on mine, turned out to be the steering angle sensor. An expensive fix for what is actually a really simple part. Would've done it myself but terrified of a shotgun airbag going off in my face. Then the rear diff ate itself, then the EGR and swirl flaps ate themselves...then I couldn't be arsed and got rid of the thing.

A good indie will always be better than a main dealer IMO. A lot of main dealer mechanics are glorified Kwik Fitters who just want to service new cars to keep the warranty stamps valid. Proper indie specialists tend to be run by oily old fellas who've been working on one make of car for decades and know them inside out - I know who I'd rather trust!!

not mine... engine warning light's just come on

If you don’t feel any loss of power it’ll be a sensor most likely. Usually a cheap fix mate. I had an Alfa Romeo once that used to light up like a Christmas tree every few weeks it had that many sensors and complained all the time about summit or other - mechanic would just clear the codes as there wasn’t anything wrong with the car. Worst car I ever owned.

thanks - was carbon build up - took me 20 mins but have burnt it off... must remember to go for a longer drive once a week or so

As a family man I can’t recommend my Skoda Octavia estate highly enough. Absolute workhorse of a car. Decent to drive on a motorway or around town. Economical and touch wood really reliable despite the hammering it takes off me.

I’ve had a Skoda Octavia green line 1.6 diesel for years. It’s done 160000mls (I’ve done the 60k.) it’s a proper workhorse and the missus hates getting in it. But apart from looking a bit boring it’s never let me down. I bought it from SK1 cars in Stockport. I’d buy another.
Nearly word for word my post

I've had a Volvo XC40 since March 21. I would absolutely recommend it, very nice to drive, comfortable, well built. I got a good deal at the time but will need to change in March 25. If I could keep it or get another I would but will probably need to get a cheaper car. Averages 40mpg but I don't drive economically so could do more.

Cost of replacement parts/labour would be the only thing I'd be wary of, but that's probably true of most modern cars.
I really enjoyed driving this car. I'm just trying to find one for a decent price now.
