Red wine appreciation thread.

Slightly off thread and probably shows my immaturity but your username always makes me chuckle.

Mrs P likes Merlot, whereas I prefer Chianti or a nice Rioja. The best one without doubt though is Barolo, which i treat myself to every now and then, (less and less these days at £15 a pop.

I think i'll get a chianti tonight and despite having stir fry stuff here already, will also get a fuck off fat as fuck fucking steak fucker.

Ha! Likewise, I have a lodger in my house, basically one of the blokes from the pub who found himself out on his ear at the same time I left my mrs. When I bought a new house he moved in too, just timing really, but he is still there 3 years on. Anyway, he's a great bloke but he is a true Strongbowholic. He's had at least 8 pints of Bow every day since he's lived there, and tucks into a few glasses of red when home from the pub before he slips into his coma in the chair each evening (back on topic).

Not a wine i'd usually drink, but if you ever get the chance to be in Paris on Beaujolais Nouveau day in November, its fucking great, loads going on and all wine based, me and Mrs BWTAC have spent a couple of very drunken breaks there.

I have only recently started enjoying a fine red (mainly with food) after I was fortunate to go on a wine and steak masterclass at the fantastic http://www.thevarsityhotel.co.uk in Cambridge. I can't say I'm an expert but after trying loads of different bottles at sainsburys at varying prices the wine I enjoy the most is one called Lambrini Cherry wine, it's really refreshing and fruity and goes well with food or on it's own, it's also really well priced.
what an uneducated lout

The amount of snobbery and cock measuring on this thread is ridiculous!

I am a wine snob and proud.
I'm just a pisshead with good taste. Learnt form the best. RIP Keith Floyd.

For those like me who partake regularly I can highly recommend joining the Wine Society. £40 one-off fee then you have the choice of all sorts of wines at all sorts of prices.

The stand-out bottle in the first case I ordered was a Bricco Rosso Suagnà Langhe Rosso, 2008 from the Piedmont region of Italy. Absolutely stunning and only £6.25 a bottle.

Joking aside - I would like to know and appreciate more about fine red wine as I would like to have some decent bottles at my house as I feel it's a very "me" drink. What makes a good bottle for you? Can you enjoy it on it's own or should it always be complimented by food?

Can someone recommend a bottle for me to try tonight from Sainsburys/Tesco's and tell me what I should look for when I drink it?

I would like to be able to know some more as I once made a bit of an arse of myself at an upscale social event when I glanced at the wine list and ordered a bottle of 'Montecristo' until the waiter embarrassingly told me it was a cigar.

I would say i'm a mixture of SWP's Back and Strongbowholic in the snobbery stakes. By that i mean I like to know what i'm drinking and won't buy any old shite, but i'll also have a good few beers before I open the bottle to get me in the mood. 4 Tyskie and a chianti will be guzzled tonight, for example. As I say, a mixture of snobbery and pissheadedness, a fine mix at that.

My brother has a wine cellar. He takes it to the extreme and is in a wine club. It would be pointless me doing that as I would drink it on delivery.

-- Thu Aug 23, 2012 11:30 am --

I'm going to Tesco in half hour. I'll let you know what I buy, wine-wise.

Right BB, been to Morrisons. They have loads on offer at the mo. I just got a Chianti for tonight which should have been £8 down to £6, and a Merlot for tomorrow which should have been £8 down to £4, (Isla Negra).
Go and get one.
If I'd have known you were going to Morrisons and not Tesco like you said, I'd have directed you to the Lussac St Emillion mentioned in my earlier post. They had a special offer on it to so was back down at around the £6.99 mark.

Well judging by the shit load of work i've done already, and with 3 hours left to go then a fucking load of decorating, I may polish the 2 off tonight. If I do i'll go and get one of those bad boys there.
