Ref Watch

Think it was a free kick for offside taken from slightly wrong position. What was interesting in that game was linesman flagging Newcastle offside straight away with no of this see if a chance happens and refer to var malarkey.
Same as when they automatically pull out a yellow if a Liverpool player goes into a bad tackle just so they can ward off any worse punishment. Meanwhile our opponents know the card isn't coming and it ends up with the Dallas injury. Game management for you.

If Richarlison had been flagged at Goodison like he should have been, the Rodri handball wouldn't exist. Yet it's now the sole reason why the Dippers are a point behind, apparently, and how unfair that somehow is...

The ref was piss poor but people blaming him for a thick footballer not having the sense to go in for a tackle that could injure them or the other player isn’t the refs fault is it?
If you don’t understand the concept numerous posters have tried to instill in you by now, there’s nothing I can say that will change your mind now.

Players change their behavior when on a yellow card. I think the challenge in question was relatively innocuous given the game, but I think Dallas would have been more prudent had the ref tightened the game up a little once the challenges started getting a little tasty.

Grealish and Foden were targeted by Marsch, because they were the chief playmakers in the side Pep picked. They were CONSTANTLY being fouled. Nothing too dangerous, but attritional fouls designed to have them lay the ball off earlier, avoid contact and, overall, reduce their effectiveness.

These are things that go on in the game that some people fail to see…the game within the game, if you will.

Dallas had already committed a poor foul that Marsch didn’t even think was a foul! That tells you the difference between views of both how the game should be played and, more specifically, the tone and tenor of this Leeds performance.

The referee sets the tone on what is and is not acceptable. He have two early fouls/yellows for players being pulled back. A non-violent, non-dangerous foul.

However, as the challenges started coming in, I think Tierney realized that he had two choices: use yellow cards and nip it in the bud OR give the teams much greater latitude lest he need to give a few reds in the second half. He chose the latter and set a tone that allowed too much to go unpunished.

He, like many modern refs, is weak. He “stamps” his authority on bullshit issues and then let’s actual foul play go, because he’s made a rod for his own back.

I just wish refs understood what PLAYERS don’t like, what endangers them, and creates tensions within the game to rise.

For me, a good ref tamps down rising tensions within the game, understands the on-field internal battles, and MANAGES the flow of the game in a way that players understand where they stand before they even start the game.

The pre-game ritual of Captains delivering the team sheets to the Officials is the perfect opportunity to set that tone. I honestly don’t know what gets said in those moments, but it is clearly not be used as it should.

He explained why the referee could be at fault here. If the referee had cautioned Dallas after his fourth foul, for persistent misconduct, Dallas would have been much more circumspect for the remainder of the game. Tierney was complicit in putting both players at risk of serious injury.
No idea how people dont understand this… you also see plenty of refs say youve had 1 this time your booked after the second challenge. Dallas got to 5 and still wasnt booked, he probably thought why not just continue to hit them if no penalty was going to come from it. Unfortunately for him, he got his deserved comeuppance for once. Poor Officiating totally caused it.

That performance by Tierney provided all the evidence needed to show why he is totally unfit to referee .

He was terrible and his absolutely useless performance led to that thug Dallas injuring himself ( Rather him than one of our players) I also believe he was the ref at Liverpool who failed to send that other thug Millner off. Although not thankfully crucial to the result he denied Sterling as clear a penalty as you'll see at Leeds. As Gordon was denied one in similar circumstances against Liverpool are we to understand now that barging opponents over in the area isn't a penalty? If that's the case, stop tackling and just shove opponents over.

Same with Tanganga back in August, numeric warnings, no card shown then just carried on hacking our lads with no consequences and got MOTM (If I remembered correctly, could be wrong on that!).

Yep. Like that season we had 10+ leg breakers against us, of which not one saw a red (few werent even given as fouls), then delph over stretched for one (Wigan away i think in the Cup), straight red!!

It depends who the barge is on or by Paul

You clearly have a differing view to me which I respect but I disagree with it, and saying I don’t understand the concept of how to manage a game from ref point of view is you making an assumption based solely on your own view point.

I do understand the concept and having played Sunday league I have done it myself when you back off after a card and having started my ref coursesI fully understand how to manage a game.

However if I was getting away with kicking a player in a game and then went in for a tackle like that and broke my leg I would have blamed myself not the ref. The ref had a shocker yes but don’t excuse a player from making a reckless tackle because of the ref. Dallas is injured because Dallas made a stupid tackle that he didn’t need to make, players know the risks. Plus given the atmosphere I wouldn’t have put it past him to be caught up in it and still go for that tackle yellow or no yellow.

What gets players more wound up than a ref who doesn’t project them is opposing players who have no care if they hurt someone else. The ref is the second point of control, the players themselves are the first. However you are 100% correct in that the ref should use his pre game briefing with the captains to make this clear.

Do I think standards of officiating games is piss poor in the PL - yes. Do I think it is because they are not capable - no. I personally believe they let things “flow” for the spectacle of the product / brand and that instruction comes from above.
