Referees’ Performances | 2024/2025

Chris Foy,retired PL referee on the radio yesterday said VAR concentrated on where the ball went after the handball. They thought this made it a possible goal scoring opportunity.
That is a red herring, where the handball occurred is where you judge whether it is a goal scoring opportunity and that was almost centre of the goal.
If they thought that then they must be fucking idiots.

I think the ball went out pretty quickly and then it stopped for a VAR check.

Incidentally, and just to sum up the FA on this, I just went to their official Youtube channel to check the highlights of the final, and this complete red card cock up wasn't considered important enough to include in their highlights video. Funny that. Nor did it appear in their 'key moments' video. So it turns out us, every pundit and all of the media are just kidding ourselves. It was just a minor moment that had no impact on the game whatsoever.

Burying the evidence of their incompetence.

ETA: Actually, the City channel shows the full play. They clear it and I'd guess (because it's cut) that it just goes to VAR at the next stoppage.

Hell, even the Palace Youtube channel shows it. But the FA too cowardly as usual.

Can't have evidence that the refereeing team decided a cup final and not the teams on the pitch being shown on the FA's website.

Where is the ball has it moved?
This was from a clip I found on Twitter X. The frames either side of this show the ball stationary, then in movement. It's a split second moment, and I think it would have been very harsh to penalise the goalkeeper, as it was a good save.

Yeah, it's really clutching at straws to try and moan about that save. The rule is in place to stop the blatant bullshit we saw in the 2005 Champions League final, where literally every one of AC Milan's penalties should have been retaken. Trying to find a toenail off the line is as bad as when they do the same thing with offside.

I didn't realise Cann wasn't allowed near the semi final for this reason.
Makes it even worse when he's allowed to be involved in the final and is front and centre in allowing a player who just happens to play for the team he is affiliated to to remain on the pitch when he should have been sent off.
He was originally down to be assistant for the palace semi. However, his last pl game was city v palace???

I don’t blame him (Atwell)for not seeing it in real time or his linesman as both were woefully behind the play

Even I thought in real time that Henderson had probably just got there first as it was hard to see ,even haarland played on

Then the game carried on - no drama ,nothing to see here?

All the time var are looking at this to see is anything is amiss?

At the next break in play ,not sure but probably around 60-90 seconds later they get atwell to pause as they obviously ask him his opinion?,they by now MUST KNOW he has handle it outside the box ?
Cannot say for certain but all atwell could have possible said is he has played on as he or his linesman couldn’t tell if there was a direct infringement??

That is where var and clear and obvious error comes into play ?

Result ?
Penalty awarded and goalkeeper sent off

Even if they had incorrectly decided no clear goal opportunity (wtf!!!)

The game should have then restarted with a yellow for Henderson and a free kick to City on the edge of the box?

Shambles

whatever shit they come up with in the next few days ,I will never believe it

Drinks had been taken so maybe my memory is a bit hazy. But I’m almost certain that play carried on long enough for Palace to regain possession and have an attack right into the City area.

Because everyone round me thought he’d stopped play to check for a possible penalty to Palace, when the VAR sign came up on the scoreboard.

If VAR don't think it's a red they can't get involved.
They can't recommend yellows or free kicks, stupid as it is!

There’s also been no media shitstorm. PGMOL & the media want him to referee the occasion, failure to do so would see him face punishment, relentless criticism & his career change direction. I think we all know if he’d applied the LOTG he would have faced the wrath of the media.
I once went to a talk by Howard Webb. He explained the pressure he was put under, by FIFA, to ensure he didn't "spoil the game " in the WC final. Hence de Jong never got sent off. Wonder why these organisations don't put pressure on the officials to implement the laws of the game.

That's correct, but it was a potential red card. We absolutely know that because many of the pundits thought it should have been a red card, and the media are debating whether or not it was a red card offence.

So at the very least, the VAR should have referred it back to Attwell for him to review it, especially as neither he nor the linesman saw the handball.

Attwell could then have viewed the incident and either red carded Henderson or deemed it not a red card and taken no further action. The VAR denied him that opportunity.

This is what fucks me off about this thread.
It is about referees performance not ours.
It doesn't matter if we win by four or get turned over by four if the **** officiating fucks up it gets called out.

So stick your "our fault for losing shit" in the post match thread and leave this for calling out the fucking appalling refereeing.

The silly thing is, if he had of been sent to the screen and decided it wasn’t a red card. He could then have at least given the free kick and booked the goalkeeper. Something the VAR is unable to recommend he does.

There's just no consistency which is why it's so frustrating.

Cann obviously has an affiliation to Palace and him being allowed to be part of VAR and then to be involved in such a shocking decision just adds weight to the theory that PGMOL are incompetent, corrupt or both.

The easy solution was to appoint someone else, so either Red Howard and his cronies are incompetent by putting Cann in this position or it was deliberate and they're corrupt.

3 minutes from the award of the penalty to the taking of it. Almost 2 minutes post the decision being confirmed by VAR.

Marmoush was stood with 5 yards behind the ball on the spot for 50 seconds before the referee blew his whistle. Delays for no reason at all.

They are complicit in slowing the game down and boring us all to death.

VAR can only get involved in this if they recommend a red card.
No red card,no free kick.
What an absurd rule. So they would have ignored a penalty (if they weren’t looking for it) and no red card was involved. A total farce. Of course it was 100 per cent a red card. The officials are just lying to us as usual. They won’t release the tape will they?
