Response to Landon Donovan's goal

"Dempsey, into the end zone, rebounds off the keeper, Donovan on the six yard touch line, scoooooooooore USA."

I haven't watched the video but thats how I imagine the commentary.

Actually the American networks showing the World Cup are all using English Commentators. THANK GOD FOR THAT!!! Love listening to Martin Tyler call the matches...beats listening to some ESPN idiot! As long as they keep Lalas in the Studio and not in the booth!

I will give Roberto Martinez credit...he does well as a pundit.

It was England's own Ian Darke with the commentary. That was his call at the end too..."GO, GO USA!"

Not a question of 'hate' (your choice of word). As it goes, I don't have any strong feelings towards the "U-S-A" one way or the other. They simply don't do themselves any favours when describing something predominantly American as being global. And it's not the first time they've done it; the "World Series" in Baseball, a purely American competition (not sure if any Canadian teams are in it). And the Superbowl winners are always called 'World Champions'. They really should realise that there is a big wide world beyond their shores. As for their celebrations, I don't have a problem with that. Any country's fans would behave in the same way.

P.S. Caps Lock is your friend!
I certainly understand where you're coming from and you have excellent points, but a ton on here are putting every US citizen under one single umbrella and labeling the country as a whole, which, in my opinion, is extremely ignorant and simply a scapegoat for the men's national team putting England in a bad situation.

Canadian teams do play in the MLB...also remind me how many clubs in the "Champions" League are really champions? Who gives a fuck really?

Quite simply, it would have looked a bit daft if the title of the vid was;

"Several places in America, a small bar in Lyon, France and Durban, South Africa react to Landon Donovan's goal"

Fair play to them, they are up for it and I hope they do get to the semis (although I think it will be tougher than the pundits on ESPN are making out)

What about
"Americans across the country join their compatriots in France and South Africa in celebrating Landon's strike"? Factually accurate!

Agreed re. the CL. In my opinion it should only be the champions of a national league that should qualify for it. Still no excuse for Americans calling the MLB & NFL winners "world champions" though!
:-)
