Retirement...when, how old and how much??

Yes again though they keep changing the goal posts on this. Let's face it they want people to snuff it particularly this heartless goverment.
Soley down to a massively ageing population, the change from 50 to 55 happened in 2010. 57 in 2028, and most likely 58 in 2038.

The rise to 57 was decided in 2014 so 14 years' notice.

Hasn’t it always been linked to state retirement age?
So hardly moving the goal posts.

He will get housing benefit/UC, pension guarantee credit and over pension age Full council tax support.

£800pcm is an extreme amount to pay for a council property if not in the south east, but unless there are spare room the HB/UC will cover the rent completely if he isn't earning and doesn't have savings.
He lives near Eastbourne mate it’s one of those housing associations down there, it’s 3 bed I would think at least one will be empty, I suppose he will manage if he gets all that help, but really should the tax payer be picking up bills like that because he’s blown a lot. I’ve done without and sorted my own finances I’ll never get anything from them because I’ll be bringing in enough, it seems sone can have their cake and eat it.

Somebody did a study a few years ago and it worked out you were only about £30-50 a month better off when you retired if you worked all your life as opposed to being unemployed all that time. I haven't got a clue on how they worked it out or on what basis. Obviously someone who saved well and had a great private pension probably fared a lot better.

I suppose if you’re not bothered with leaving anything for your kids it might be worth it.

You’d get the same state pension as long as you registered at the job centre.

If one bedroom is free it means he would only get 86% of his rent paid, two or more spare 75%.

It is the people with modest pensions and a bit of money in the bank who get nothing yet own their homes and have the cost of maintaining them who are the worst off, and up here it is often a badly insulated (or extremely hard to insulate) pre-1919 terraced home. Where as Social Stock will be generally a lot cheaper to heat.

I know people who live near my parents who've never worked. I guess if you're happy sitting around all day doing very little and not bothered about going on holidays, hobbies etcetera why not? I enjoyed work for many years but there were times I got stressed and envied people who didn't have that stress.
