Retirement...when, how old and how much??

Retirement is overrated said no one ever, I’ve never slept so soundly after nearly 35 years of shifts/nights/weekends it’s a game changer. Shifts for me are a killer, I really noticed it about 5/6 years ago how bad I felt after night shifts. The earlier you can retire the better,I’m not saying forgo the rest of your life to do it but if you can save to finish in your 50s as by your 60s you’ll probably be too knackered to enjoy it.
I read somewhere that shift workers are at a much higher rate of stroke and cardiac arrest too!

Alternating shifts should be banned. They wreak havoc on the mind and body.

I hear what you’re saying but doing 4-7 nights straight is awful as well. You then have to switch over to do days and so on, decades of it is not good same as physical work into you 60s it’s a receipe for an early grave

My first shift pattern was a 7 day 8 hour nights onto a quick change to a 2- 10.
Like a friggin Zombie even in my 20’s.

Me & my Mrs went in to semi retirement at 50 and 44.
Fully retired just before Covid struck at 62 and 56.
We have a monthly allowance of £10k but usually spend nothing like that.
I have a mate, a year older than me and he has a comfortable lifestyle on around 1100 per month including his State Pension.

Could you not spend the spare money on penis enlargement?

Got an appointment with my FA soon but just wanted to see what other have/are doing. Cheers.
Depends on your commitments and what if any you wish to pass on to family.

If you want to continue your lifestyle as is notwithstanding , your health costs will increase as will utility costs you need as much (notwithstanding the rate of inflation which you won't be as cushioned against when you are no longer working ) as your gross income is nearing retirement each year.

Recently gone part time, aged 50,after 30 plus years of shifts/unsocial hours.

Like you,as soon as you can afford it......reduce hours or pack in completely.

Mentally and physically i feel better already.
