Richer Than God - David Conn

Off on hols tomorrow so bought the obligatory holiday book yesterday 'Richer Than God' by David Conn. For those of you who don't know about the book, David is a blue and sports journalist for the Guardian. The book looks at modern football with a specific focus on City, the takeover by Sheik Mansour and how his feelings towards his beloved club have changed over the years with the influx of money.

I started the book last night and couldn't put it down. It's a truly excellent read. It brings back memories of going to Maine Road in the '70s through to some interesting insights into our owners. I had always hoped that Sheik Mansour's intentions for the club were honorable and from what I have read so far (still in the early stages of the book), that seems to be very much the case. We even get a mention in chapter 1 where Conn references the 'Sheik Mansour' banner that lots on here chipped in for.

I can't wait to get all of the packing done today so I can get back to the book. From what I have read so far I recommend it to anyone who fancies a good piece of investigative sports journalism coupled with nostalgic snippets of the club we all love. No doubt David comes on here so if you do see this 'Take a bow son'!

It's a superb book.

Conn's, Gary James latest one and "Down Amongst THe Dead Men" are the best three City books ever written.
 
I thought it was bobbins. Apart from a couple of fleeting interviews with the Sheikh it was full of tired old drab from newspapers & rewritten extracts from other books or interviews. Nothing new or exciting IMO but each to their own.
 
Get yourself a razzle off the top shelf, now theres a quality read but if on the beach will have to be enjoyed with your back to the sun

I seriously doubt you've read it. He didn't interview the Sheikh for one thing and a lot of it is autobiographical.
 
I thought it was a good book, there were some things I did not agree with, but overall what struck me was the hidden passion for City he wrote about and displayed when writing about that wonderful day in May last year. I got the feeling he felt like I did that day

Some of the things I disagreed with somehow made the book more interesting e.g. DC not being bothered about the QPR game made me feel even more privileged to have been at the match.

I disagree with Kippax and there was no information and angles. The interview with Franny Lee was very telling but maybe Iimed this part of the book because it reinforced my feelings about the Forward with Franny Campaign
