I do have some sympathy with David over his comments about the Lee takeover as I also didn't really equate football clubs and limited companies at the time and I'd spent 6 years in accountancy prior to that. It didn't really strike home until I started writing about City's finances about 10 years later.Hadn't he qualified as a solicitor by the time of the Lee takeover? If that's correct, I really wouldn't be inclined to buy that he was unaware of the fact that the club was a limited company with shareholders. However, it's not really important.
I bumped this thread just to give credit where credit's due. While I've had a go at him earlier in the thread for what I regard as the worst aspects of his work (as exemplified by his embracing of those clownish wannabes at FC United and his silence over their current off-field problems), the Hillsborough inquest has shown how good he can be at exposing wrongdoing in the game. I have great respect for his work on that matter, and if he writes a book about Hillsborough in due course, I'm sure it will be excellent.
Like you, I really can't understand his love for FCUM either but his work on Hillsborough has been top notch and we're so lucky to have someone like him writing stuff like that. There's a danger that people like Sky get to set the media agenda on the game, making out everything's wonderful. Then people like David come along and piss on their chips by exposing the seamy, grubby side of the game.
