Only went for the beer and culture, but thought it was a wonderful city. The range and quality of beer in the centre (particularly in an open air place on one of the cobbled squares) was as good as you'd get in places like Port Street Beer House and Brew Dog, at bargain prices. Good food too.

If you like adventure, I recommend the central market (centraltirgus) which fills several Zeppelin hangers full of dead animals (and pleasant stuff), and has a market-traders bar on the east side which is THE spit & sawdust pub (collection of football stuff if I remember rightly).

Stay out of prison though.

Try to identify national monuments with the rest of the crew before you go out.

Make a point 'not' to piss on them on the way back to the hotel.

Like any other big City there are good & bad things .keep your wits about you & things shoild be fine plenty of go go bars to ge tripped of in & dont mess with the bouncers they dont fuck about keep your self to your self & you wont get any mither

Went about 8 or 9 years ago for Christmas and enjoyed it. However, it was a "family trip" with the wife and kids, staying in a decent hotel, so didn't get to see the seedier side of the place. I was fascinated by the Soviet influences and the Russians still living there alongside the more Scandinavian influenced Latvians. The women by and large were stunning. The locals in the shops and restaurants were pleasant and helpful.
The only slight problem we had was with a taxi. If memory serves, the official taxis there are all red. After a day out, we needed a taxi back to the hotel and were stood at a rank struggling to get one. A car pulls up and says he's a taxi. We get to the hotel and he tries to charge us around £40 for a 5 minute journey. He was told to piss off and got a fiver. The hotel receptionist told us it was an illegal taxi run by the Russian Mafia.
I suppose the nightlife will have changed since we were there as the Ryanair flights made it a popular stag do place and where there are a load of pissed up lads roaming there will be people there ready to rip you off - it's the same worldwide.
