RIP Barney Daniels

That's sad news. He coached at my kids' school, where my ex also worked, so she knew him. We bumped into him in Asda one day and she introduced me. Then he turned up regularly as our relief postman, plus I used to bump into him regularly in the now defunct Roach Bank pub in Pilsworth.

His real name was actually Bernard.
I wonder if that's where Bernard Sumner got the idea to use Barney instead of Bernard from!!

Sad news to hear of the passing of former blue Barney Daniels this week who sadly passed away aged 74.

Signed by Tony Book he would make his blues debut in a 1-0 home win over Derby County curtesy of a Colin Bell strike on 6th February 1974, going on to appear 16 times between 1973 & 1975 including hitting two goals in a 4-1 win over Leicester City during November 1974. Barney would leave Maine Road in the summer of 1975 to become Chester City’s then record singing and duly hit a spectacular 25 yarder strike on his debut.

Sending condolences to Charlene and all his family and friends at this difficult time.

Thank you for your kind wordsx

Remember seeing him play for us at Anfield in 73-74. The oh so hilarious Scousers were referring to him as Barney Rubble when he came on as a sub. - Scouse wit - Dontcha just love it!
RIP Barney.

I first started watching City's first team in the 1975/76 season at the age of six and I always say that my first City idol was the imperious Dave Watson, who joined in the summer before that campaign began. In fact, though, Barney, who left that same summer, was actually my first hero.

Unlike with the senior side, I can't remember specific matches or dates, but I know that my old man was taking me to see the reserves at an earlier stage and it must have been in 19074/75. I spent a lot of the time running up and down the Main Stand steps with other kids, but the main (in fact, pretty much the only) thing I recall from events on the pitch is that Barney seemed to score every week. As these games represented my entire point of reference for professional football at the time, I thought this was as good as it got and I loved him for it.

I saw a typically excellent piece by @Gary James on his site that quoted Barney's City stats and it turns out that he scored 44 goals in 62 reserve games for City, which would average out at a tally of 30 for a 42-game season. That definitely merits the description of prolific and I'm glad to say my memory wasn't failing me. Sincere condolences to Rachelle and his family on their loss, and RIP Barney, who for a while for me was a real-life Roy of the Rovers figure.

The deal was £2k and give Ashton a game at Hurst Cross
We got kicked to fuck by Ashton rags in the ground and later on Ashton Bus Station
The next Sunday my mate got a kicking in the bogs at Tiffany’s got mistaken for being Bulldog lol

That's a pretty impressive strike rate at any level.

RIP Barney
