Riyad Mahrez

Leicester are misguided to take Coutinho fee as the benchmark for Mahrez valuation; similarities are goals from outside the box, otherwise Coutinho brings plenty more meat to the table. Mahrez useful in a specific scenario - quick counters, which I am guessing is the reason Pep wants him, would be impressive on one wing and Sane on the other wing. We don't need Coutinho type skills - plenty of those at City already. And given < 5 teams attack us in PL, Mahrez would only be a squad player. Could permanently replace Sterling when we play Liverpool, also good against Arsenal, Spurs and that's it really.

Stats showing Mahrez has more goals/assists than Coutinho are not that useful really - Sterling has more goals than KDB yet it's indisputable KDB's value to the team is much higher because of his global impact on matches.

So £60m-£65m is fair price for Mahrez. Barca overpaid for Coutinho but really who were they going to get to replace Iniesta? Liverpool overpaid for VVD in the same way we "overpaid" for Ederson.

Wouldnt want to be him in that leicester changing room. Not really his fault the situation as we did go in on the last day of the window.

He too though must feel like a prisoner at leicester

£65m was a correct amount for the player though

City were clearly assuming Sanchez would be automatically signed in January. Surely though, a contingency plan should have been in place earlier (ie talks with Leicester, even sounding them out) so at least they were aware of our interest and giving them time to look at replacements.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't do a deal with him whereby they let him talk to and reach an agreement with a club on the basis they'll accept something more reasonable in the Summer, say £55m, so long as he works hard from now until the end of the Season. I don't think Pep will move on but will come back in the Summer.

Great post

My impression was that we actually wanted to sign Fred when it turned out that Sanchez did not happen. Only the Sane injury caused us to change opinion again and switch our interest to Mahrez. So perhaps there just wasn't any more time.

They had weeks.... we were in talks re Mahrez in December if you believe the rumours

We probably inquired, like we do with other players such as hazard (if you believe the rumours).

We were linked with Sanchez and it looked like he'd come, but he decided to choose money over trophies. That then led us to look at other options but it was too late imo.

Man City train is over but Riyad Mehrez wants to meet with the administration to find out why he was prevented from achieving his dream
