Riyad Mahrez

That's always the risk we have to take it pays off more often than not, even when it doesn't work like in Kompany's case it's usually quickly remedied.

With that particular case though I feel it was mostly out of our hands, Kompany left quite out the blue (no pun intended) to player/manage his boyhood team... I think that possibly caught us really off guard and we weren't fully prepared to replace him with anyone second rate, it was kind of last minute we expected him to be here longer unlike the others where we were fully prepared.

I do get your point he's a fantastic player Riyad with very high qualities, he won't be easy to replace but we're constantly evolving, Pep might think the defensive demands needed by our new system might not be to his strengths, that's not to say he didn't work hard tracking back a few times last season once it was implemented.

Pep though is a ruthless manager if he's sensed that we can move Riyad on I trust that judgment, personally I'm torn but I think that he might want players with more energy to quickly win the ball back... Like Phil or Bernardo or Alvarez they don't have the numbers Mahrez does, what they bring off the ball might be the deciding factor for Pep, I'm not saying it's defo the case but he's ruthless and that's why he's the best.

We should just be careful not to lose Gundogan Bernardo and Mahrez in the same summer window, this could be a serious problem but if we keep Bernie another year to cushion the blow I'm happy, if not we definitely need at least one more high quality midfield signing.

Only time will tell where our players will play next season but I can see a lot more evolving, a few surprises with chopping and changing thanks to our really versatile squad, especially with KdB potentially out a while but it'll be a good test for the lads early on.
I'm clinging to the idea if they all go and pep gets some very hungry pups in, it might make him hang around. #thedream

Where Riyad's concerned, it was only when considering a better right sided player in world football right now & his 1 in 3 goal contributions & 1 in 4 assists that his crucial effectiveness for us really hit home.

Pep evidently wants him, so if Riyad's happy to see out his final two years with us, I'll be seriously made up! The same applies to Walker & Bernardo too.

Again, I can't think of better in world football to replace any of them. Ultimately, in Pep & Txiki I trust. )(

Now for our annual Left Back issue! I STILL badly want Alphonso Davies... :-)

Can play centrally as well. Here’s some highlights from the PL2 derby last season, playing in the David Silva role. Kid is destined for greatness

I've said before, this kid needs to be involved with the first team and to get chances. He has the skillset to be something very special for us. No guarantees but it'd be a huge fuck up on our part to not try and make the most of him.

I keep thinking he's young (16 or 17) but he turned 20 yesterday so unless he's got a decent loan lined up for the season he must be part of the 1st team squad now. Under contract for another 3 years so he can force their hands with a better contract in 12 months time if he impresses.

I’d love for him to succeed here but the level it takes to be in the first team is still quite something else. I agree with you , we should do everything to try and make it work.

However, even talented players like Palmer, Rico Lewis have barely scratched the surface. Foden has done it because he is really special. That’s the expectation, even a senior pro who’s played under Bielsa is struggling and stressed because he cannot find game time. I think we should expect the best from our youth talent, at the same time keep our expectations in check about how it will go, because even giving an opportunity to any youngster goes a long way, no guarantees whether the first cameo is the last, or whether the unexpected happens re: Lewis, when we thought Walker and Cancelo is huge depth for one side.

I believe the same happened with Lavia, just wrong timing, nothing we could do, and for his sake it turned out to be a very good move. This is the cost of having the best talent in the country, we saw Chelsea lose their talent to other clubs for years, or even rid of them unjustifiably, but that’s the tricky part about top level.
