No doubt there are Bluemooners old enough to recall watching week after week, pretty much without change:

Trautmann, Leivers, Little, Barnes, Ewing, Paul, Johnstone, Hayes, Revie, Dyson, Clarke

But times have changed. These days professional football is genuinely a squad game.

Fortunately we have a manager who knows that. Yesterday the Sky interviewer asked Roberto about the line-up versus Inter : "Was this your best 11." His answer was perfect: "Yes. And yesterday's was my best 11!"

Roberto was also clearly irritated by the interviewer asking him whether Mario could be City's best striker. His reply was that we have a good set of strikers and that competition will be healthy. But he clearly did not want to rank them.

Personally I would like to see a bit less obsession on Bluemoon with 'our best 11' and certainly less of the argument that "these are well-paid footballers who ought to be able to play on Sunday, then again on Wednesday in the Carling Cup, and then on Saturday again..." I would also like to see less of the "this city player is better than that City player", certainly when it degenerates into "that City player is gash"!

I agree, every player who pulls on the city shirt and gives it his best is for me a great player!

footy fans are fickle mate, one week a player is shit, the next he should be captain. its part and parcel of being a fan.

its a roller coaster ride, most fans feel the same (though some are clearly unhinged and shouldnt be allowed to convese with normal fans).

questioning a players performance is what makes the game so good to follow, having an opinion is a privilege football fans around the world are allowed and speculation makes the football world turn.

i agree with your comments, people are too quick to judge and put down a player (dzeko?) but it will never change - human nature will always win.

I think we need to be able to change tactics/personnel to match the opposition so we wouldn't have a best 11 - dare I say it, like the rags do.

You are absolutely right about changing the tactics / personnel to match the opposition!

But Ferguson does not operate with a best 11 irrespective of opposition. Dare I say it: I was watching a United game on TV (in April or May?). The commentator said that it was the first time in well over a 100 games (I cannot recall the exact number) that Ferguson has chosen the same starting 11 in two consecutive games.

Instead of a "What will the team be vs swansea" we should have "what will our 25 man squad be".

Not forgetting all the rules obviously about home grown and u21.

'Best eleven' is an idiotic phrase in context of today's top clubs. Depends who you're playing, where you're playing, who you played last, who you play next, when you played last and all sorts. That's why teams now have a best 25 (+ kids!)

Our best 11 as it stands

was bound to happen

The juvenile (or should it be 'infantile') nature of Bluemooner33's post confirms my point beautifully!
