I'd play him in cups and Europe, tell him he has until January to prove he wants to be in 25 man squad (which he will if we're near top!).
Let him know we're only interested in running his contract down for the next 2 seasons, not many clubs are willing to take on a troublesome 28/29 year old - he'll only have 2 years left at the top - his choice!

If there is any truth to it then the problem is that he isn't arsed about being at the top. Madrid and City have set him up for life and he isn't arsed about achieving anything int he game and would rather doss about on the beach [playign pub football.
