Delighted for Rodri, well deserved. If it is purely a footballing decision, then Vicinius would also have been a deserving winner. But as the annual Messi award has shown, it isn’t always about just the football. There are reasons why Madrid and Barca players win it annually, whether it is deserved or not.
The reaction yesterday of Madrid is at first glance petulant and hugely disrespectful to Spanish football, let alone Rodri, and as everyone knows they are a rancid club. But I suspect however that this has more to do with FIFA and UEFA politics rather than Madrid simply having a tantrum. There is an ongoing row about appearance money for the new FIFA tournament next summer, a tournament that UEFA don’t want. Madrid are the darlings of UEFA, and want a huge fee for turning up, FIFA have said no and instructed them to turn up anyway, with all their star players. There is a major power struggle going on here and this is just another part of it.
But regardless of that, well done Rodri. Our players have been denied so many awards for political reasons over the years. This time for once, it has perhaps worked in our favour.
