Think it's a contract thing the release clause is actually a buy out for the player to buy out his own contract different to a release clause in say Portugal or France. The tax thing is it used to be seen as the player getting an income and then deciding to spend it on his buyout. That's why Spanish buyouts turned out more expensive that agreeing a fee with the club. Think the tax thing has now changed though.I think if the club pays it - it attracts VAT but not if the player pays it... there’s certainly a tax reason why the player makes the payment in Spain.
