Everton away. Night game.

Can't remember when but we took loads.

Cops told us we shouldn't have come if we didn't want trouble.

Hundreds of City hiding in a cemetery nearby until it died down.

Everton were evil that night. They were after Donald mainly.

Similar experience at Liverpool away around 1979 - night game - we got thrashed (as usual). Scousers were asking everyone without a red scarf for the time. I tried to put on a scouse accent - but they could tell and we dived into the cemetery to escape.
"Safely" back on the coach and a brick came flying through the window. Helen (the bell) sucked glass out of my hand - strange what people would do back then.

Apart from the rags, English fans are now much more pleasant - the same cannot be said for Italy. I have never seen so much hatred as I did in Naples last season - from women and children as well. I might have understood if they had lost. Dropped off at the port after midnight- no police and had to run from the Ultras and their knives. Crazy.

Yep alas she is, I slagged him off away at Southampton for exactly that and was close to a kicking, instant backtracking and pleading for my life was the only thing that saved me..! I will put a good word in for ya if she clocks this but apart from that your on your own im afraid...!!!

Appreciated pal! - I was also at that game.. what a shower of shite it was too, and you weren't alone in slagging joe off for playing absolute shite, me and about 4 other lads around me were too! - Sounds like we were lucky and avoided your misses then..

On the very dangerous subject of Joe, i think this year he's been lazy and looks like he know's he's first pick and he needs to be pushed harder! - We need to sign another good quality keeper to keep joe on his toes

At the risk of death I have to agree, I love Joe to bits and wouldn't swop him but I do feel he has been poor at times this season and that game was a perfect example.. I was spitting fire I was that mad at getting turned over by them, it was the beginning of the end of the league defence. Anyway onwards and upwards, Im sure Joe will be back on top form next season and can see us winning the league, gonna do a couple of CL away games this time so cant wait for the draw

Good man, I want to get at least one CL away in this year too - I'll meet up with you and your misses, and she can keep me safe on those dangerous foreign streets :P

Stoke away 1967/8. We were below the Stoke fans and can remember bottles cascading down on our heads. Luckily I missed all the bottles but some of us must have been hit and suffered serious injury.

Couldn't happen today obviously.

Went on to win the league.

Wimbeldon first game of the season, mid 1980s I think. I was stood towards the back of the away end, near the exit and I could see the road outside. Around half time a big mob of Chelsea turn up and start throwing stuff into the away end. They then managed to get a milk float and started to throw bottles into our end. After the game I remember fighting our way back to the station accross this farmers field. I can still see the dust clouds as fans battled.

Wolves was a dodgey place back in the day, I remember going to the game after Colin Bells comeback against Newcastle. They had segregation in the South stand but allowed everyone to use the same toilets underneath. Plenty of Wolves fans ended up in our end, kicking off with city fans and the police.

Apart from Millwall and Leeds (which I only saw from a distance) Chelsea in a midweek League Cup game in 1984 or so sticks in the memory. I was living in London and had just met my future missus, so I asked her to come to the game. It was her first football match. Got the best seats in the main stand where I thought we'd be OK. City almost scored and I jumped up, at which a neanderthal, a middle aged bloke not a kid, came over and said "iv u do that again u are fuckin' dead, wiv this', showing us a shiny little knife. Ten minutes from the end with City losing heavily a copper came to tell us "leave now or I can't promise you'll be safe." We left, the missus didn't go to another match for years.

Think it was a 1-1 draw, the 4-0 was before that with no segregation. Wolves was always rough, even if they won

Always find these threads a good read.

As someone born in the late 80's, who's been going regularly away since 2005 I can safely say it's nothing like the old days!

A few times I remember feeling intimidated: back in Poznan after the away game was a bit on top. They all looked like uncle Fester and had the look of "we hate England" written all over their faces.

Also, after the 6-1 at Old Trafford (do you remember that?) walking back to town from their was grim. I was with about 25 City fans and you were getting reds running across the road at us all the way home. Police everywhere. Helicopters circling above. Glass being smashed. I remember a united fan having a police dog bite him and he carried on walking with the dog on his hand! No one I was with got touched anyway, and we had a laugh at the knobs.

Off the scale.

Were you at the train station the night before the game? That was truly off-the-scale.

No we were down by the Old Port.
We'd driven down, go to our hotel the night before then found a bar full of England...

On the way back, a car passed us and some local fucker threw a battery from a passing car.. One of those big square ones which hit me on the hip... limping around for days.

The shenanigans after the game and into that night were scary as fuck. ONLY time I've ever seen England fans on the 'back foot'. ( was in Spain for 1982 WC as well, but this was worse!)

We couldn't get tickets so we all crammed into this bar.. there was about 80 England fans in. It was up the main road from the 'beach' where all the problems started during the game. Scholes scored and we heard about it kicking off at the beach.. (They had a Big screen and thousands of chairs lined up for ticket less fans).

At half time, I was on the phone to my bird and she asked me about the trouble, they'd seen on BBC... I said what trouble... then this lad came and banged on the phone box for me to get out... hundreds of French Africans... swarming the bar... The English lads, ran at them and gave it them proper... The police came into the bar and we though 'here we go'... but they just said 'calm down, England is OK'... then they came again and all sorts flying... the police fucking hammered them.

we were looking for somewhere to eat later that night, and everywhere was shut, a stench of tear gas and smoke everywhere. Then some lad shouted us... it was a tiny indian restaurant ... so an hour or so chilling... then murders getting back to hotel! We pissed off to Lloret for 5 days ... until the next game in Toulouse. No problems there!

So, I've been to leeds, WHU, Chelsea, Stoke, Boro, United, Everton, Millwall, Brum, Newcastle... Nothing compared to Marseille!

'stick together england' !!

Forgot about that!!! Yep, that's probably No 2 mate..... But the England fans didn't bottle it... remember when we got back... and it was all happening under our window.... and you opened the window and let all the tear gas into the bedrooms... LOFL!

Taffy (Pete O) was with me, Willis and Dave Trow (rip) in Marseille... ask him!!!

been to all grounds mentioned on here.

scariest for me personally was Boro (ayresome park).......4 of us having to get an escort by 6 coppers for the mile walk back to the car for our own safety.......surrounded/followed by mob of boro baying for our blood and hoping the coppers would only walk us back part way.

Been in quite a few scrapes over the years but can honestly say the only place I got a good beating was Swindon......yes Swindon !!
Got chased by 8/9 lads through a car park, hiding underneath a car but being dragged out and laid into by all of them........my face was not a pretty sight the next day.
Got our own back though as we was driving away from the ground in the van as we saw the same lads walking down the street......van doors burst open and 12 of us jumped out to gain revenge........felt better afterwards, haha.

all we could here walking up that road was (mainly) cockney voices saying 'stick together england' as Turks were trying to goad us down side streets.........then 30/40 decided to run at some down a side street.......only to re-appear 20 secs later being chased by loads of them.....funny as f*ck.
Yeh, grandstand view of the Turks/riot police outside our hotel.....until the tear gas arrived !!

We got jumped at Swindon too, on the way back to the train station. A group of lads were drinking in a bar and just came out swinging punches. They ran away when a couple of us defended ourselves. We came to the conclusion that they were rags and the ultimate irony was that the only one of our group that came unstuck was a rag who was just out on the piss with us.
