Despite the reputations these cars had I can honestly say I don't recall my old fella ever having any problems with either of his. However a relative had a Moonraker Blue 2600SE that was besieged with problems.

I wanted one of these so badly back in the day. Crying shame that Britain no longer has a mass production car industry. Especially when you think of the shit that Fiat, Renault and Citroen have pumped out and still remained in business.

Great picture that mate and being a D plate must have been one of the very last ones before it was replaced by the 800 series. My Dad's second like this was also Black. He had to wait a while for it as it was quite a custom colour along with the trim he specified. Totally understand why you would have wanted one as well. Despite it's problems it was a stunning looking car. Far better looking than anything Ford, BMW, Mercedes were producing at the time for similar money. And it's criminal what happened to Rover and the British car industry in general.

Got to say I watched a program earlier with regard to the down fall of British Leyland and what an absolute shambles from what at the time was the world's 4th biggest car maker. Each part of the company at war with each other.

I was in the trade from 1977 to 2009 and that statement is so true.

Add to that VW.....have to take my hat off to their marketing though.

Re SD the 2600 was the best to have from memory.

Read or heard somewhere, poss.Top Gear, that the UK now produces more cars and of better quality than we have ever done since the 60s. Granted, the vast majority are of non UK badges but we produce the best niche market cars not to mention most of the F1 cars, rally cars etc etc. Seems we have a knack of producing high end goods.

I toured the Ford factory in Halewood mid 90s and it was an absolute shambles.....even the guy driving the bus that picked us up was slagging Ford off!

There then was a threat to shut the factory due to union disruption etc.

I went back about 5 years later and the transformation was incredible.Pride in what they were doing was so evident.

They then started producing Jag X Types and the quality was fantastic.

As my Dad says, a staunch socialist, the working man is his own worst enemy some times.

I used to deliver to Ford at Speke in the early 90s. The storeman at the particular store I delivered to was infamous. No matter what time of day you went, he'd sit there in his little office reading the paper and drinking a brew. He would completely ignore you for at least ten minutes. I often stood there with my finger on the bell which would ring right in his fucking earhole and the **** would still ignore you. Then when he finally deigned to recognise your existence he wouldn't even look at your delivery, he'd just take the paperwork and stamp it. The lazy bastard even had a stamp with his signature on so he didn't have to sign.
