Ruben Dias - Benfica confirm sale to City

What is interesting why we cannot afford our plan A or plan B targets. Is it really because we might offer 60m euros, but they want 75m euros?

This seems to scare Txiki very much, but when it comes to selling player and getting nice fees on selling players, he is not scared to sell someone worth 20m euros for 5m euros.
He doesn't decide the budget so I doubt the budget scares him, he just works with it.

Who did Txiki say we’re our Plan A and Plan B targets?

We know pretty much for a fact that we wanted a commanding, quality CB to replace Kompany, someone who could partner Laporte in all of our important games. With that in mind it's fair to say that Rúben Dias was almost certainly not our first or second choice. He's far more in the Stones mould as I understand it, young and promising but still rough defensively.

we were in for him last season, Benfica put a 90m clause on him, so that says to me he was wanted as first choice, however due to his price we walked away.
we went for KK , again his price was silly for a 29 year old, we went for kounde whose price was excessive considering his inexperience, maybe Benfica have said we will lower his price add ota and its a deal(maybe they needed the money) weve said yep we will do it.

hes been scouted and pep wanted him last season
he isnt our 4th choice
he is young and experience
bluemoon is full of slapped arsed cry babies who want their own way.

just my take on things.

Spot on. Not only do they want things their way, but their way is also determined by information from social media and the alleged word of chairmen who are attempting to shift players on. I do not know much about Dias at all and neither did I know much about Koulibali or Kounde. What I do know is that I trust the management team to make decent signings as we have become the decade's most successful English club and have many things that are the envy of football, even though some on here seem intent on rubbishing any move we make.

I think there's also a lot to admire about his aggression, which I think Koundé also lacks, and something our defenders aside Walker lack in general. It can lead to some bad moments, but his type of a no nonsense defender and someone who is quite aggressive will benefit us.

In my opinion this type of aggressive defending is getting phased out in modern day football with the use of VAR & protection/advantage given towards the attacker.

I would prefer an athletic defender who can keep up with the forward play & not dive in.

Whilst Dias doesn’t appear to be no slouch, I fear he hasn’t been exposed to playing in a high line defense such as ours where if you go aggressive & lose out you’re literally the last line of defense with lots of green ahead.

Have to agree with Pep’s earlier comments it’s a tough job to be a defender in his team & you almost have to be a perfect specimen which really doesn’t exist.

Can see why a lot of people liked Koundé for his athleticism & calm, but effective defending. The trade off with Dias seems to be leadership & presence he brings to the table & backline, which the former needs to develop & we have lacked since Vinny left.

Also think Benfica being the only team so far who seems to be willing to accept Otamendi as part of a deal & therefore getting him off our books is attractive to us.

Get them both in fuck it. Stones, Otamendi, Garcia Out.

Laporte
Dias
Kounde
Ake
Stones was bought for 50m, and no one would currently pay more than 20-25m for him, he needs to fight for his place, get good form and then hope for a move. Him staying is his best opportunity of redeeming himself at the highest level, else he'll just end up back at a non top 6 club to see out his career.

Hell have an annual transfer budget. if we spend less, then just like the pisscan did he'll receive a percentage of how much under budget we spend. Any transfer fees in will be offset against the budget.

Same age as Van Dijk was when he moved to Southampton. Similar pedigree, maybe even more pedigree due to his International experience (won the Nation's League with Portugal as starting CB). Similar characteristics in terms of his defending. Composed, strong in the tackle, excellent and dominant in the air. Seasoned Portugal watchers say that he doesn't make mistakes. A year ago was considered worthy of his release clause. Had a poor final third of the 19/20 season in a Benfica side that collapsed but his form in 18/19 earned him the hype he has generated.

The negativity around his ability is misplaced IMO. His 'weakness' is actually his short/medium passing. But honestly we've got loads of ball players, what we need are players who can defend like defenders and with some intelligence. Plus he'll improve on the ball under Pep.

So basically he is a good defender, a leader, intelligent, reads the game well, not lightning quick but also not slow and not an amazing passer but still still better than most centre backs.... Is that not a description on Kompany?

The passing stats on Whoscored are mightily impressive for Dias, with more than 92% completion.
