rush men arena 22nd may

Just got back from seeing them in Birmingham. I thought that they were, as ever, excellent. I've seen every UK tour - including the Bingley Hall only dates - so I love the early stuff but I am quite happy for them to mix it up each tour.

I can understand why some people might not have been thrilled with the first set but I fairly recently rediscovered Power Windows (the last of my vinyl Rush to be duplicated on cd) so I was delighted they picked a few from that one. I do like synth era Rush almost as much as the music that came before. I also enjoyed that the staging was relatively subdued in the first half and then went barking mad in the second half.

Clockwork Angels is their best album for ages and my only complaint about the songs they performed from that album was that they didn't play Seven Cities of Gold. Particularly enjoyed the Garden and Wish You Well.

The Bingley Hall/ cattle shed was a great gig wasn't it? and i've never been one for moaning about what songs they put on their setlist, they could all come out and fart in tune for an hour and i'm sure it'd go down well. I was lucky enough to have seen them at the Apollo in 1980 (as a 13 year old) and (thanks to Blue2112) fortunate enough to have seen this tour. So that's just the 9 Rush gigs for me and they've just got better and better as the years progress....and has been stated before they can't go on forever and i treat each show as possibly being the last time i see them...i hope they'll do an R40 tour with a track from every album....and i'd really love them to do the debut album in its entirety but i think that's just wishful thinking.

(and that brunette violinist in the middle was pretty hot too)

I saw both shows at the cow shed in Sept 1979 and they were good gigs; also saw them earlier that year at the Apollo.

They did two nights at the Apollo in June 1980, went to both of those. In fact, those gigs were part of a rather busy gig going period: saw Fleetwood Mac (@ the cow shed) the night before Rush and Van Halen at the Apollo the night after; followed be consecutive evenings of Van Halen in Leicester, two Styx's gigs at Hammersmith and two more VH at the Rainbow. Pretty sure I saw Whitesnake a couple of days before F.Mac. Not done anything quite like that before or since; although I have got four gigs in five nights this June.

Quartz supported Rush. i think VH had some strange German band supporting them. VH themsleves were spectacular that tour. They had the biggest light rig that I have ever seen inside a UK theatre, which was fine above a big stage like the Apollo's or Rainbow's but at the De Monfort Hall, half of it was over the crowd. I think the rig had 800 lamps: it was in the day's before Vari-Lites.
